We have more than one generation of adults raised that have been told "you can do anything you want". Once that hits the brain of many people it turns into. "You are entitled to any job you want". I give food and many times water to some when I see them. Is it always going to legit hungry and thirsty people probably not but oh well. I think hungry people should have food and water, homeless should have shelter if they choose to use it. Our problem is we allow our government to give cash for those things on the honor system. Tack on cash to have kids, cable tv(it exists), smartphones, transportation, weed etc... as basic rights for the poor. Cash has to stop. It's making the problem a larger animal than can be stopped.

People like your uncle do need help from us, and we should try to help them. Unfortunately it is so hard to know who is a true bum and those who have real mental issues.

Mental health advocates need to start blaming the bums for taking all of the resources that would go to help people with mental issues.

This is maybe a bit over-simplified, but I like where you're going with this.

it would give us more time to discuss important issues like how to grille a steak so it cooks evenly

Move over indirect heat to an internal temp of ~130ish.

Bite the bullet and use a damned remote meat thermometer until you "know" WTF with your given cooking appliance.

The end.

A lot of them (homeless in general) suffer from mental illness. Schizophrenia, multiple personality, and so on. Plenty of beggars in Eau Claire. Pretty sad to see.

Painhandlers aren't the only human debris plaguing Eau Claire. I understand it's also full of 'Sconis.

Now show me cold smoking cheese with that thing. I gotta think that the chimney makes it easy to run a vent hose off the top to a separate box.

I'm not sure where I heard it, possibly that shitty old site. But supposedly the guy that's usually at state street was seen hopping out of a brand new Tahoe at the Kmart parking lot.

No offense to anyone, but I think that guess-timating that 95% of the panhandlers are perfectly capable of landing and maintain a job, might be a bit high. I'm not saying that they're all incapable, but there are a LOT of people who used to be in institutions, who got turned out on the street when the money ran out. I'd like to see where the 95% number comes from, instead of Kentucky Windage.

Why did you have to bring me into this? Does my outfit suggest I'm knowledgable about panhandling?

I fired a girl one time for telling me to "F$ck off" when i was the GM, a few months later she was begging at south Walmart. I've also had homeless people tell me that they're not going to work for less then $15-20 an hour, which blows my mind because they had no definable skill sets and it was an easy sit-on-your-ass job (call center).

A defining moment in everyone's life is when you finally realize that the world doesn't owe you shit, if you want something get off your ass and work for it like the rest of us. I should keep random job applications from Job Service in my car so i can hand them out to people when i see them.

That is an excellent idea!!!

When my Dad used to see pan-handlers he would ask them if they wanted a meal, then he would take them to a restaurant and buy it for them. He wouldn't give them cash.
Also i don't remember 1 hitchhiker that we would pass by. We would pick them up all the time and take them as far as we could. Often my Dad would stop and buy their meal or a night in a hotel. Wouldn't do this today as one could get their throat slit.
