I do not have info on this particular place, but my guess is the deer more than likely were tearing into his grain bags. It happens plenty in our area and is very costly adventure to the farmers.

Doesn't the G&F have a program for this where they give the farmer fencing to put up around the feed?

[h=1]Depredation Assistance[/h]Depredation Assistance Program - provides funding for activities used to alleviate/minimize damage to private livestock feed supplies caused by big game animals (manpower, technical assistance, temporary fencing, repellents, scare devices, and deer-proof hay yard fences). Payments will not be made for damage caused by wildlife.

It all seems so simple to get that assistance as it is right there in writing, yet you forget you are working with the government. Have seen where assistance was asked and didnt get there to help for 3 days and if not for 24/7 harassment the deer dont leave if no other food source in bad winters.

An investigation revealed several deer lying dead in the area around Klein’s farmstead in early January 2017 with many of the recovered animals sent to Bismarck to be necropsied. The complaint against Klein was filed Aug. 22, 2017.
So why 9 months to arrest this farmer?

Been there and got some assistance for protecting livestock feed which was 1 rolls of orange snow fence. At tjose times it helped fill a gap and something we didn't think of trying in our situation. After that no more asking the gov't but by no means did we ever kill an animal and just let it waste Especially not the deer and turkey causing it

And no we did not poach for additional food

I have seen the damage a flock of turkeys can do to a silage or feed pile. How do you keep something out that can fly?

just a guess, but "damage caused by wildlife" may mean renumeration for lost grain, feed, or hay...

"Some reports have the number of dead and wounded deer as high as 29."......sounds sensationalized to me, as if it were a school shooting! I don't condone what he did, but really GF Herald? Then again, I'm not a farmer depending on grain stock....
