Every year around this time I get a couple of lighter patches of grass in my front yard, and it seems to be in the same location every year as well. Any ideas? Fungus?

Seriously: Put a pile of chicken shi'ite on the spot just before the first snow.

buried treasure....No I don't have any clue. I can't get my lawn to look nice regardless what I do. My dog tore a bag of grass seed open while it was on the driveway. Did the seed grow in the dirt that I meticulously watered and watched?...No. Sure as hell will grow in the cracks of the driveway and rocks. I hate grass.

Apply lawn lime next spring to the entire yard. It will balance the ph, neutralize the soils, and create an even appearance next season.
You likely have an area that has different seed, and soil composition.
Lime can be found at most yard type stores.

Svn and his chicken shit, I guess I'm not sure about any of that.

I have never tried the chicken sh!t idea. The only way I have found to get rid of it is round up and re seed. I like to round up late fall and re seed in the spring. Good luck.

This is only something that shows up this time of year. Otherwise the lawn looks very uniform for most of the year. This is a very plush lawn with almost no weeds. Gets lots of water from the English Coulee.

Chicken scat is not very popular with the neighbors. The scent carries... I know two chicken farmers who won't eat the bird with the greenest lawns-- like an acid trip. Anyways, that's why I said do it before the first snow (as close as possible).

Juanner also knows damn right. I forgot about that. Grandma used to lime her yard and it was all I could do to mow it after I spent an hour getting the damn mower started. I'm refraining from much profanity now. Holy shi'ite that was hard to push and you sure as hell didn't want to bog down the frustrating engine. It was lush and I enjoyed drought periods. In case of question; the wheels were set high.

Could be nitrogen, Svns chicken shi'ite will work, make sure it is well aged. We had grass that turned light green due to iron deficiency. Lawn guy put chelated iron on it and by the end of the day it was dark green. Alternate method would be to stop watering and fish more.

Looks like shallow black soil over poor clay to me. Fertilizer as some mentioned would certainly help since it's nutrients the poor soil is missing. I have a spot something like that, but it's caused by acid from not cleaning up crab apples. I leave them because the deer like them. Also some hang on the tree and they are soft and mushy, and fun to shoot with a big hollow point pellet.

Soil composition would be about right. Maybe some clay to close to surface, drys out in august heat and will not let water through, careful with chicken poop. too much and you will have a bare spot for years to come because of too much ammonia. Had a friend put a whole pickup load of turkey crap on a 25x25 garden. nothing grew for three years.
