As a percentage, yes. However, the median home value is around $660k compared to the $232k here in ND. The property tax on a median home is about $4,700 in CA compared to $2,300 here in ND.

Let's remember they also enjoy up to a 14.4% state income tax versus our maximum of 2.5%, state sales tax of 7.75% versus our 5%, and a city sales tax of up to 2.5% (note, Tioga has a 3.5% city sales tax).

Let's put it this way, just this morning I was reading an article about how California is losing its high earners as they flee the tax structure of California. They just went below 39,000,000 residents (legal???) for the first time since 2015.
I can tell you where a lot are going. Neighbor down the road drives a cybertruck. Guessing he wouldn't enjoy hearing where his electricity comes from.

Grand Forks has a cybertruck driving around also. I wonder if California will ever recover. The climate is about the only thing that is worth living there if you ask me.

Property values just came out here in Dickinson. Ours homes value went up $66,800 in one year.

So glad we voted to keep property taxes.

They spoke of giving us a $1,400 kick back of our money, so they just clobber us from the back side.

@johnr , wow that is absolutely ridiculous. And I'd guess nobody came and did an inspection inside or out? They need to explain (try) the justification for such a jump.

I am no expert on this but I think what is happening is the local governments are going crazy with home valuations increases is because the proposed legislation passes they can only go up 3% a year .

If this is what they are doing the need to cut the locals off at the knees and make the proposed legislation retro active. This property tax issue is less of a state issue than it is a tax, tax, tax, tax, and spend local issue.

Tried the same to me last year here in Fargo-88,000increase....called and told them I wanted someone to come out and look at my house as they never did since I built during the beginning of covid. I told the lady they sent that at the rates you keep increasing my home value it will have doubled in just over 7years and there is no way that is possible. As this was the second increase in 4 years. After her evaluation she agreed and took my value back down to what it was prior to the increase. We will see how long that lasts.

I think the property values for all politicians in the county/state should go up before anyone else. Why? Because it's their fricken idea. They should pay before even one of their constituents is considered for a tax increase. If you want to increase property values, start with your house and properties Mr. Politician. Once that's in place, then you can try to justify tapping the people. That's just me though.

When the legislature is made up in large part by farmers, they dont pay a dime on their residence. Plus, they dont pay market value on their farm land, they pay production value which is less than 20% at most of what market value for their land is. Mind you the only property class that gets this kind of treatment. Any they are the ones that pass the tax laws.. Tax thee but not me at its finest. crazy
Iam not anti-ag or anti-farmer, I just think that an occupational p. tax exemption is unequitable.

Require them to pay double the rate the average man pays and maybe they will think twice before spend frivolously or raise taxes.

Market value is driving it for them. I don't know of the ND system specifics, but in SD we just passed a limitation on valuation increases. But, my house has well over doubled in value in 10 years, and that isn't on paper. I could literally sell it today for well over double what I paid. That alone is incredible and didn't just pop up since they floated the idea of a max. percentage increase. I have no idea how this pace can continue as it's essentially not viable for much of the working population in my area.

SD played with a lot of ideas this session and the underlying truth that kept appearing was that the revenue had to come from somewhere. We don't have an income tax, give tax exemptions to huge industries in the state, and have reduced our sales tax in recent years. We don't spend frivolously either. The bottom line is that we need XX amount to keep the state running and nobody can settle on an alternative to property taxes. But we are sitting on a pot full of gold like you Nodak folk are either LOL. When the legislature meets, there is never much talk of cutting. It's always add or add money to maintain. That isn't changing and I doubt our property tax system will either.
