Some ppl like deer opener, some ppl like fishing opener,(Mn) but for me personally..and my dog, the REAL excitement is about to begin! Back when I was a young man it was all about the killing, get a limit and start the bragging about the gun..the dog, the well placed shot...yadda yadda yadda. As i get older and maybe wiser, haha, i am on my 3rd dog who is approaching 7yrs old, it no longer is about how many i may get but rather watching and having fun and enjoying my dog who is out having the time of her life, whether we get a limit or just one or two..or even none that day. People can learn a lot from a dog. Good hunting to you all..Enjoy

I can't get too excited for ditch parrots until after deer season. Then there's nothing else to do except chase them around.

Still plenty of crops up. Should get really good in a few weeks.

Damn straight roosters, the love of the hunt whatever your quarry...but I concure whether in a blind bangin ducks/geese or afield, roosters sharpies etc, most often these days solo with my golden boy Duce, scratch out a bird or two great, blank who cares,we enjoyed the day, simple thing's like watching your pup,the excitement is priceless.

Had one pup that retrieved my spent shells iffin I missed the target,he even bolted once out of my truck bed whilst shooting clay targets and I missed,he seen the clay target go down after I shot and decided to help out.

Sorry to hear short, you and your pup's had a great run,I'll miss your pic's and adventures....

Curious are you dogless now?If so the reason? I'm on the fence as my age and health has me scratching my head about another pup after 50 years with a gun dog/best friend.

I love my GSP, however when he passes, I wont be getting another.
We travel a ton, and its a huge pain in the ass, and not fair to the dog.

If I could somehow have a dog for 4 weekends a year:;:exactly

I can’t imagine being with out a dog. I had that 2 falls ago and it was horrible. If my dog can’t travel with me I see no point in going.

the benefits of a dog far out weigh the pain in the ass they can be to me. I wish more people would realize they only want a dog a few weekends a year before they get one.

I am on my 7th dog, I by no means want to be thought of as a guy who only wants to hunt my dog, then put him in a kennel for 11 months.

I am mostly stating that when my current buddy passes on, I will not be replacing him. I would however like to have a dog that I was not attached to and could just "use" 4-5 weekends a year. Then he could go back to his loving family and life is good.

Sorry for the confusion, my dog(all of them) have been a huge part of my life and go everywhere with me when possible. But things in life change, and I wont be adding a dog in the future.

You don't have to apologize to anyone. I knew a few people that would buy a trained dog from a trainer. And two months down the road sell the same dog back to the trainer for half the money they paid. Does that make them bad sportsman or hunters no it does not. It's know ones business what they do.

After 50+ years with goldens,my boyz always ride "shotgun" everywhere, local saloon my current boy has a following, some hotties/saloon had a bucket of milk bones for folks to go make friends, goldens love everyone with or w/o treats,I put the boy in the truck bed so I could keep an eye on him whilst having a brew, sometimes several ppl lined up to give him a treato and a few pets, whether on hunting trips/fishing or just traveling my boyz demanded to tag along, most would jump in the truck cab as I loaded my gear with truck door left open...Current pupper claim dibs on my wheeler as well, added a plateform on the rear rack just for him, fire up the wheeler he comes running like "wait for me" priceless.

Traveling? always perfer motel's with a drive up to the door entrance,to unload gear/pup...easy peasy.

Only time I air traveled with my pup was coming back to the lower 48 from AK with my boy...scary deal putting him crated in the cargo hole,Made sure the captain was aware he had a 4 legged traveler in the cargo hole to keep it warm at 30k'ft,this was before direct flights from anchorage to mpls,When we tranferred to a different flight,captain/co pilot came down to the cargo area as I was checking on my boy as we had a 2 hour lay over in cali...they had to see who was so special to have the entire flight crew on alert.

I've had success with two youth deer this year, maybe that luck will spill into some good pheasants this year. I haven't been able to quite figure it out yet.

We had a GSP but quickly learned that he was too much for us. He had way too much energy for our family. We got him when he was older so it was much harder to work with him and the kids didn't like him that much. He was way too rough with the kids. So much energy that he couldn't control himself and would hurt the kids. If I could find a relaxed dog that didn't go 110mph all the time, I would probably consider getting one. But for now we are good with out mini-wienie. He's a good dog, just can't do pheasants with him.

Lifetime investment so be positive you really want the responsibility.

I was hunting SE ND once a few years back, at the refuge that's down there. We were packing back up in the truck and two guys pull into the parking area with a little mini doberman type dog in the front middle seat, looking through the windshield. I kind of watched while they got ready and we continued to pack up, grab water for us and the dog, etc. He took the dog out, after they had all their guns ready and everything, I assumed so it could take a leak before they put it back in and go walk. But no, they started walking away from the truck and locked it. I asked him about the dog and he said yep it hunts with them. He said it can't go off the game trails in really thick stuff but he works fine, and off they went into the grass.

Bummer about your GSP. We really lucked out with ours, and she is very relaxed for the most part. She'll get wound up if we get her excited, but that's kind of what we wanted.
