My 3 conclusions:
1) SDMF is BLS's motto, ZW is the goat and horsager stole it from bandman's signature (me) back in the nodak outdoor days 🤣 I memba berries..
2) sad and glad the fireworks are done, but still anticipate the occasional ones til Monday.
3) moderators with a power trip (tobyized) can and will ruin shit as fast as illegal immigrants. Theatrical drama and bar fights aren't for everyone, but neither is church. A successful site will never last with boring stagnation and will go the way of NDO and FBO; a glacier in hell. Most on here have been thru all the thousands of topics of the outdoor world and are more than self sufficient until the "new" comes along. Let it get boring in the lull, and this site is as good as gone as yesterday just like it's two predecessors. If this site ever failed, the new one would have to be called Midwest thick-skinners.
Reading through things is like fishing, keep what u want; throw back what u don't. Or be the fish and either take the bait or keep swimming for another day 😎

@SDMF , just a simple question. How would you recommend training your dog to be tolerant of fire works. My black lab I had that passed away about 10 yrs ago would heal by my side, I could shot a case load of shells shooting trap if wanted to and she wouldn't move. Same with rifle, she would sit right by the truck while shooting at the range. Was not afraid of thunder or other loud noises, but fireworks she would just about go into trauma. Even inside the house she would shake like crazy. Was I suppose to take her out, stand on her leash and fire off a shit load of fireworks and make her go through the bullshit just to "get used to it" ? Just asking, many people in same.predicament?

Crate training and in the house. That crate needs to be the safe place from the day you get the dog home. When mine is in his crate he is used to commotion because of our tests hard to simulate that. Our little dog is terrified he wants to go chill on the bed in the bedroom that’s his safe spot.

My last dog and current dog absolutely love fireworks. I'm not sure how or why my last dog got too love them but when the neighbors would start lighting them off he would cry to go chase them. I think his excitement for them is why my current dog is the same. I worry that she'll break free and put her head over them. My last dog got a little scorched one time on one of those fountain type fireworks. He was kinda a big dummy in some ways and was a puppy his whole life. I'm sure that's why my current dog likes them. She sat in the car with my wife last night and left nose prints on the windshield. She enjoyed the little show we put on.

Maybe it was because I'd shoot bottle rockets one at a time and he learned what a fuse was and that it would fly and go boom....IDK... So maybe you could train your do by starting with sparklers and small fire crackers one at a time. Bottle rockets fly away and dont mahe a very loud boom. My second to last dog didn't care for them. She'd just go in her crate or go lay in the bathroom when the neighbors started up.

All 3 dogs have used the spare bedroom, corner by the the futon for their safe place . Have a doggie bed there for them since they liked that.

Tried the crate. She would chew through the wire or use her body to slam the crate across the room and eventually get out. She is the opposite and any confined space she wants to escape from once the firework ls start. She’s similar to wslayer is saying. As long as I’m there she’s ok. She’ll be heeled right next to me and shaking but seems to do better. First year freaked out I was pissed I thought she was ruined for hunting now too. Nope could care less about guns and blasts while hunting. It’s just fireworks and occasional thunderstorm

We walk our dogs to Fox Island each morning to let them swim. Part of our daily routine is to pick-up some of the litter / glass in the parking area. This morning we were expecting the usual mess left from the fourth. To our pleasant surprise, the parking lot was clean! Nice work people!!

Did you crate train from a puppie? A good crate matters those wire ones are junk.

I live right out of city limits so it was about 3 hours straight not counting the big show from the rodeo. As soon as we go out side to use the bathroom he is on 10 looking for birds. A couple no birds and pee back in the box. Little dog I have to put on a leash I don’t need him and his one eye running off in the dark.

Yes she was crate trained early on and did fine. Before she was older/during the cold months she would stay inside in the crate and didnt really have any issues. We got an XL crate so plenty of room. Suprised me she could ram it hard enough to move the whole thing. Ended up putting it on pallet and securing it down. Then she figured out she could chew it enough to pull the metal door open. We used to be able to leave her for a few days outside in her run which has an insulated house and have family check in daily. I can’t even consider that anymore as when she has a panick attack because of a fire work she has learned she can chew the chain link and pull it back. Now we leave her in the house because she is pretty good in the house alone but the panic attavks will make her piss herself. Im trying here and I understand and accept the responsibility associated with a dog but it’s the randomness of unpredictably of fireworks that have me pretty frustrated. Could be 10 am could be 5pm. Either way it definitely fucks things up for a few weeks

Also, I'm sympathetic to dogs. They're both stupid as fuck and genius. When you get a pup you should also get a cap gun and starter pistol to coincide with feeding and play. No matter the breed.
Why would I , I paid my dues. Your starting to sound like that guy on here who want's hemp and CBD outlawed again.
No gdmt MARIJUANA for rec use.

Let's all change course on this topic and discuss Fargos Somali Heritage thingy today.:sneaky:

Important part of our heritage here in the North Land.

Edited to add: dogs do not need a " crate" or a " safe space".

Treats. Noise, treat. Noise treat. Just like w/guns, start small, work up.

Treats.

Also, significantly more exercise during “fireworks” days. Time around the 4th is of course warm, so plan a water source accordingly. maybe make them “water-work” days. Swimming is plenty easy on dogs during the hot. A tuckered out dog is less apt to care about fireworks.

5 labs, 3 English cockers, and a Shi-Tzu. None of them have ever given more than a passing glance @ fireworks.
