I think to test their hypothesis of hook mortality with deeper fish, the GFP should hook fish in shallow water and fight for the longer time period. That could somewhat simulate the longer fight from deeper fish and reject or accept their null hypothesis. I would like to hear some backup data or a hypothesis regarding the conclusion of live baiting could increase hook mortality.

Pretty interesting study. Personally I "very rarely" fish deeper than 20' of water for any species, summer or winter. ( don't catch enough in the deep to warrant fishing that deep. I know, I suck ).
Wonder if ever an issue with (ex.) Salmon or Lake Trout as they are often 80' + deep

I believe lake trout burp out and release air, so do not think they are affected.
