What do you do?

I drive around winter, summer, spring and fall with my window down looking for mailboxes to stuff with junk mail; times 27 years now. Won't be much longer...snowbirding in the future as well as fishing year around in open water. To heck with that hard stuff!!

Sven and Ole worked together, and both were laid off, so off they went to the unemployment office. Asked his occupation, Ole said "Panty stitcher. I sew the elastic onto cotton panties."

The clerk looked up panty stitcher. Finding it classed as unskilled labor, she gave him $300 a week unemployment pay.

Sven was asked his occupation. "Diesel fitter" he replied. Since diesel fitters was a skilled job the clerk gave Sven $600 a week.

When Ole found out he was furious. He stormed back in to find out why his friend and co-worker was collecting double his pay.

The clerk explained: panty stitchers were unskilled and diesel fitters were skilled labor.

"What skill?" yelled Ole. "I sew the elastic on, Sven pulls on it and says, "Yep, diesel fitter."

I knew that!!!

UND grad '68 with a BSCE and 40 years in construction. Four+ years in heavy construction as a civilian in Viet Nam ('68 - '72), eight+ plus years with a company building refineries and chemical plants ('73 - 81) and 27+ years building apartments and houses in CA. Retired now and spending summers on Lake Metigoshe and winters in San Jose, CA.

My job sucks 95%of the whole time. I drive trains around. Locomotive engineer. Just carry bombs through the state hoping for a day off to go fish! Trust me we don't explode as much as the new makes it sound.

Interesting jobs all. Wonder what it would be like to switch for a day. You do mine I do yours.? I would like to be a scientist for a day like guy and ghost.

Haha. I can't speak for Guy, but I spend precisely 0 time in a lab if that is what you think. I'm the guy that pulls the samples, gets them to the lab, and then explains the results to the clients to try to keep them in compliance. It involves a lot of time outside, sometimes on a boat, and just about every day is different. So all in all, it is enjoyable as far as employment goes. But then again, I am working through the weekend on a project that is going to take another two years plus which will mean many more weekends, so....

I get a nice mix. Tinkering in lab, field trials of new stuff, writing, conferences, presentations, training, yadda. I am fortunate.
