This is how I learned to pick asparagus. In language that NDA members will understand. You use 2 fingers and thumb. Place F--ky finger at base of plant, Place trigger finger slightly above F--ky finger, Press thumb between fingers and snap. If breaks clean then it was ripe for picking. Repeat until your basket is full.

This is what my garden looks like later in the summer. I pick asparagus with a old filet knife. Just below the ground. When it is about 7 inches tall and 3/4 inch in diameter. Tender as can be!

I planted some back in 2012, tended to them the first few years, with no harvest to let them generate the patch they recommended. Watered, weeded, fertilized, really got a nice big patch going, and then that fall when we had finally done all we can to insure a spring crop of splendid produce, mrs johnr puts our house up for sale, and I never ate the fruits of my labor...:(

ha haaa.... asparagus interruptus

I'm sure they don't spray any chemicals on the store bought stuff to keep it looking fresh (insert sarcasm here)

I have like 20 asparagus plants in my yard I need to remove, gonna take them out somewhere and plant them, just not sure where to do it. Needs to be close enough to town to be handy, but remote enough not to get jacked by someone else right away every year...

I love the crunchy texture of the asparagus! I'm going to have to get some growing myself? are they simple to grow?? or do they take a close eye?

It's fairly easy to grow once it takes off. Just do a Google search for growing asparagus. Tons of info out there.
The biggest one ever!

I have been harvesting wild asparagus from the farm for 2 weeks now (Bismarck area). I never understood the desire to pick asparagus out a ditch that most likely gets sprayed every year and probably receives lots of other pollutants. Yah, its the easiest way to find a lot a plants fast, but I would never put that into my body.

I had some 1"to 1.25" thick in a Texas restaurant one time and they were the best I ever had. Ever since I have preferred the thicker sprouts vs the thin. You just need to snap of the harder woody base and then use a peeler to take of the skin on the bottom 3/4 of the sprout.

Dan's in Bismarck has some pretty thick ones right now (3/4"). Usually only see them this time a year for a week or two. Then it goes back to the pencil size.

Asparagus hunting's been good around VC. We ate everything from our garden, so we had to look elsewhere. It worked!!!
