Just wondering if anyone has come across any lakes starting to have trouble.

Heard through the grapevine that the GnF testing wasn't too bad, but I'm guessing an email or two to them would answer that. Heard a report of stinky water at Etta, but we'll see. Hopefully the January/February thaw was enough to save some of them.

I'm thinking sconi kill will end up being worse than winter kill. Saw 4 sconi vehicles pulling into a gas station with trailers 4 wheelers and flipovers either heading west or coming from west. must have been about 6-7 wheelers

I would guess some early thaw runoff and snow melt to help light penetration did wonders in that department.

That's what I was hoping for to but I've yet to see it punch through any of the lakes Ive looked at first hand. Hell I've barely seen any water actually run down the low spots... most just got sucked up by the dry soil or soaked up by what snow still remained.

The water stunk out there in December so I think it was still stinky from the summer.

I asked GNF why the water at Etta/Long lake stunk. This was their reply: "That smell is hydrogen sulfide gas, which is produced by certain bacteria when there is no oxygen in the water. Etta had very low dissolved oxygen, and we started getting reports of smelly water earlier this winter. It’s at risk for a winterkill."

My parents did well out their for pike as recent as last week so it did not kill completely, if at all. Bet the fish were happy to see the ice going off.

pike being alive is not necessarily a good sign for the rest of the fish population... northern pike can survive (in winter) much lower dissolved oxygen levels than many other fish a pike can survive for several days at 0.1 - 0.4mg/l levels... a walleye for example it is lethal at or below 1mg/l

referances:
walleye
pike

Our local lake had a winter kill about 5 years ago, it was horrific. The smell, all the dead fish on the shore line, and of course the carp and other rough fish were just fine. They actually put a chemical into the lake to kill off the entire fish population, and restocked it the next spring, with pike, walleye, catfish, and crappie, maybe some other breeds too, cant remember. Its actually come around fairly nice these last couple years.

The only time the lake my folks are on had a winter kill there was almost zero sign come spring. It was weird there was a tiny bit of a oil like shine on the water and a couple dead babby bluegill but in the end nearly 90% of the fish had died including most of the carp....well either that or they were abducted by aliens.

No bad chit like that around here that I've seen, smelled, or heard about. No dead deer in the fields and the pheasants appear to have fought through the winter pretty good. Saw quite a few roosters and hens scattered about the country side so here's to hoping all the hens and does pull off a clutch or have twins!!!!

Does are splitting out from the wintering herd and looks like the hens and roosters did very good. Now hope we get the right weather for hatch.
