I've been rifle hunting and sitting still in the woods and had people smoking cigs march past me without even looking me in the eye. Public is public, and some folks just don't give a damn.

What I've found is that these seldom wreck the hunt. I can't even count how many times I've seen deer literally minutes after a drive has occurred. Those deer think they're being sneaky by circling back through the woods after the other people have walked past.

Several years ago we were rifle hunting our normal area and we watched 2 guys walk a tree row. No shitting you -- there was a deer walking about 40 years right behind them following them. They had no idea it was there!

What makes you assume Mr. Rifle hunter has not scouted and watched deer all season and he feels good about the spot he intends to hunt? Neither hunter has more of a right over the other the difference is Mr. gun hunter only has 16 1/2 days and Mr. bow hunter has 122 days plus to hunt.
while I get what you are trying to say...why does one hunter have more of a right over the other hunter? because one has a stick and string? because one has waited longer than another?

I mean Mr. Bowhunter has put in his time and watched deer all season and feels good about the spot he got up early for and has been sitting in...but because Mr. Rifle hasn't shot a gun in 5 years that gives him the right to go tramping through Mr. Bowhunter's space?

I don't really think it's a right or wrong but more of a common courtesy ... if you want to be an asshat and wreck someone's hunt then by all means be an asshat...but why be an asshat?

I for one will find a different spot if someone beat me to Position A. Tensions are already running high enough during the short rifle season. No need to fan the flames by being a dickhead and stomping in on someone who beat you there. Or do it. Clearly you’re a man of principle and I’m confused.

Public land is public land - everyone can hit it anytime. Just because someone is there prior to another person doesn't give either one priority.

I've had people come up on us on Public and Private land and either stop and visit or say hi and move on. We've come up on others as well, acknowledge them and either visit and move on. Or if we notice them prior to getting to where we want to be, we go on around them giving them room and head to a different spot.

Courtesy..... some people lack it.

My dad said when he was young, there were no units, the season opened at sunrise and you could hunt wherever you wanted. He said hunters all piled into the best areas and it was a huge shitshow the first morning so they moved the opener to noon. That probably wasn't the only reason but part of it.

Actually, in the 60's is when they had no unit restrictions, had metal bands for tagging back then. Dad liked the idea of being able to go wherever he wanted. One of the reasons he quit hunting deer was because of the unit restriction they came up with, he didn't like the idea, thought it was dumb, still does.

In my opinion the first person there should be able to finish their hunt...So if Mr. bowhunter has been sitting there since 5am and Mr. Rifle hunter trots in at 11:59am then Mr Rifle becomes an asshat...Mr. Rifle certainly has the "right" to do so, doesn't make him any less of an asshat though...this keeping in mind he is aware or has suspicion someone is currently hunting an area...

It really boils down to common courtesy, which is lacking a lot now-a-days. Lets try and put it in Mr. Rifle logic:

Large section of PLOTS land CRP on both sides with 4 wide shelter belt running down the middle, let’s say north to south. 1 prairie trail leads to SE corner from the S another road runs along the north end coming in from the west. 2 Mr. Rifles park at the SE corner of section walk in and start walking shelter belt, S to N …. 3 completely different Mr. Rifles park on NW approach of road and start walking N to S … which ones are asshats?

Is this one of those trick math questions??? Sorry had to do it........all have the right to hunt the public land, its just matter how they go about it.

Do you bow hunt public land during rifle season knowing the woods your are sitting in will be crawling with gun hunters?

Sure do. Even dye my beard blaze so I fit in. But when I do hunt public land during rifle season I’m usually far enough away from the road to mostly eliminate the chances of someone molesting my hunt. And if I pull up to a wma, wpa, chunk of plots, etc and there’s a vehicle there, I move on. They beat me to it and deserve to hunt without me screwing it up. But again. I’m not smart or very experienced so I defer to your morals on the matter.

The question I have does Mr. bow hunter sit in his stand all day when he bow hunts or just when he bow hunts during rifle season?

Ah, deer season. Where everyone argues every aspect of something most of us claim to enjoy. I just love this time of the year.

Screw you cock'a'roach!!! How dare you blemish our time honored traditions of bashing each other on the eve of murder and mayhem where each of us can, and does, complain, point fingers, argue, criticize, and try to utterly destroy anyone who hunts deer different than we do while simultaneously claiming we are members of one big sportsmanlike family. Move to Moscow Comrade Poopyface!!!!

And next week the picture tag police and online official scorers get to come out of hibernation. And we get to see who shot who's deer.

Ha ha right!
I always say it is a time of year when for two weeks allot perfectly normal folks lose their fricken minds! ha ha ha
That why I try and be someplace else at least for opening weekend. Could never understand "even as a kid" why in the hell we have our rifle season smack dab during the best days of the rut breeding season. When deer you have barely seen all year are suddenly standing in the ditch right beside the road begging to be shot.

Its time for all the crazys to come out. You know the ushers at church on Sunday are going to be calling you a som-bitch for shooting THEIR DEER or for posting your land. But in 16 and 1/2 days you will all be friends again, unless you fish THEIR LAKE.
