A few years ago I won a Black Betty reel and a St. Croix rod. Love the setup, have 4lb test on the reel and only use it for pan fishing perch and gills. Works great with the tiniest tungsten jigs.

I got the Freefall Ghost last year and it is my first in line, paired with 3lb Flouro on a snitch rod and that setup was in my hands more often than not almost all outings, but I'm targeting perch, gills, crappie. My overall opinion is I really liked it and will be at least adding a Decent for a bait clicker deadstick rod with 4-5lb to go with my scheels version of a Meatstick.
On the reel it is super light, comfortable, really like the release trigger, good drag but I bet the high priced freefall is a little better. I did make one little change and that was take the spool apart and replace/add some Quantum Hot Sauce oil and grease to some of the gearing after a few outings and the biggest change was a much improved drop rate for the light lures and a smoother sounding feeling crank. They are super simple and efficient reels and so much easier to play the drag when needed and can see myself replacing a few more of my spinners with these inlines as time goes on

Sawyer,
I’m a big fan of the free fall. Personally I like the pistol release. They have the drag strength to handle big fish as well.

Used in line reels exclusively for a couple of years, I really like them for perch and smaller fish but kept losing larger walleye. I don't think the drag works well for bigger fish. I've gone back to a quality spinning reel and it's really helped landing larger eyes.

Free fall is prob one of the better inline reels. Some inlines don’t have a drag built in unless you let go of the handle

Reel is on wrong side. Isn't it? Is it on right side or left ? I know when I went to buy one it was opposite then a baitcaster. And I was like nope

My crank is on the left side. I think most models you can Left or Right, I know the 13 Fishing Freefalls and Decent you can get either or.
As far as drag systems go I think that is one area that all are just improving on mostly probably just need better internals. With inlines like bait casters everything is straight so in theory should be more efficient and just as strong or stronger, they also require being tuned and treated a little different. I hooked a couple big bass last year and never landed them but then again I was set for gills and by the time I caught up with my drag adjusting, after I went the wrong way, they were able to spit that tiny hook. It is nice not having to take your hand off the crank to make adjustments while fighting a fish.

I am the odd one on this subject. I bought 2 of the Black Betty Freefalls 2 years ago. I thought they would be great for the Perch bite on Devils. I liked the feel, weight, and the trigger. No matter what lube I used, how clean I kept them, or free of ice they were I just couldn't get the Tungsten back to the bottom fast enough to take full advantage of the Perch bite windows as they were presented to me. I sold them both and kept with the 500 size spinning reels.

I had read somewhere that the magnets inside that determine your fall rate were a little too strong and if you went in and remove one I believe it made a huge difference, the one I bought last year I did not have that problem I felt so have not messed with it. That supposedly had been fixed after the first run of production.

Both, but 75% outside (if fishing sitting in my drivers seat is considered outside). I am a hole hopping addict.

I had a 2nd season run of them; but do not know if there was a design change between 1st and 2nd year.

I have one...don't use it all that often...mostly shallow water as it take a while to get down to the bottom. I think i probably bought it in the first place a number of years back as i am sure i heard from a neighbor's brother, uncle, 2nd cousin's, nephew was bragging about inline reels at the local watering hole and i just had to pick one up.

I sometimes wonder if a guy gets previous models that were carry overs especially if there is no physical or packaging changes (salesmen are normally salesmen and usually not mechanics). I guess if there were times I wanted my small jigs to unspool faster I probably did just the same tricks I normally do with my spinning reels, quick lifts to peel line or or use my free hand/sometimes just spun the reel spool on my ghost. In the end I still wouldn't have just one type anymore for my fishing and I'm keeping my spinning reels I got already setup and just going to add one or two inlines in the next 2yrs with the first one being an experiment this year and then I will decide next year.

Sawyer,
They have a magnet to control the drop same as a baitcaster. You can make them fall fast even with 1/16 or lighter if it’s set right. As far as drag, I pulled my biggest pike ever on a free fall last year fishing for eyes. The rod wasn’t heavy either and that drag fought him like a champ. 46” pike.
