Airplane Trails

What is the white trail behind this airplane that flew overhead today? Why do some airplanes leave a trail and some do not? Why do some leave a short trail and others leave a trail that goes for miles? Is this a passenger plane? I need to know!

Yea that appears to be a passenger plane. 747 to be exact

It's just warm air (jet engine exhaust) condensing when meeting a colder air mass. The length of time the plume exists and dissipates is dependent on the air temperature, moisture, and wind. It's similar to when you see car exhaust on cold days.

As I write this there is a plane going over heading to Tokyo from Minneapolis

I took that flight - twice.

ive seen some where it must me military training or something, making loops and very hard turns.

Once in while they will show refueling tankers, they make a lot of turns and sometimes have a Drone flying around over by Devils Lake making a lot of turns

There is something about when you see the long lasting contrails that in like 3 days it will be cloudy or we will get precip. I remember hearing Tom Schrader talk about it on his weather report one time but don't remember the exact details.
