I was under the understanding that the rubber tires would prevent the transfer of this energy, being it was not grounded so to speak
I believe the charge can still come from the air..think of a bolt of lightning..usually there are charges breaking off from the main beam that are visible. I am sure there is a charge that a guy can't see as well that could hit the vehicle and probably not leave any evidence. The charge would go on the outside of the vehicle but my guess is any shock or increase to the system could fry it.

Yeah I thought the same Johnr and I'm no expert on the physics of electrical energy in a lightning strike. My adhd imagination came up with a theory that after the lightning hit the ground that it splintered out from the ground and up hitting anything in its radius. I know it's sound crazy 🤪 but again if the lightnings energy in someway didn't physically touch the pickup, it's going to be hard to prove the a lightning strike destroyed his pickups electrical system.

You are thinking that the lightning energy was released in the form of an electricity pulse wave? Something similar to what an emp does? The energy I'm thinking would still have to show physical signs of burnt electrical components, because if you can't find any forensic evidence of electrical damage he is going to have a hard time proving damages were caused by a lightning strike.

Always thought that same thing until many years ago in town an old 50's something chevy pickup sitting about 15 feet from a tall pine tree. Lightning hit the tree left a trail right to the pickup tire. Blew the tire out and the engine oil dipstick almost completely out of its tube.

That or a direct hit from a smaller charge coming off the main bolt? I know some of our equipment at work was struck during a thunderstorm and there was no sign of a specific burnt area a person would think of if a bolt hit it directly...yet it was actually struck by the lightning..confirmed by video.

So what did your job end up doing with the machine that was seen on video being struck by lightning?

Not sure on that one..I wasn't involved in the repair. I just happened to be there the day after it hit and seen the equipment and video...my guess computers replaced.

So can you explain what the video looked like to us, since I haven't ever heard of anyone witnessing a lightning strike ricochet hitting another object. Because you can Google lightning strike hitting vehicles and there is all kinds of examples with visual evidence to claim damages.

nobody's ever been in a lighting storm and felt the static electricity in the air?
No less than 3 times, I'm somewhat of a lightning magnet. The neatest was back in high school days when a buddy and I were shore fishing one morning during a nasty lightning storm . Slip weights on bottom with some slack in mono line. Every time there was a bolt of lightning the static caused the slack in the lines to raise and fall. We were sitting in my vehicle watching and laughing. I couldn't belive how much the lines would move.

I think the closest was early one morning when it was just getting light and wife and I were still in bed. Right outside bedroom window was power pole and meter , Lightning struck the pole and scared the crap out of us very loud and bright . I forget if power went off or not but when I got up and looked around it had split the power pole and there was splinters laying around and the biggest chunk of wood was about 75 feet away .

In the oilfield we saw lots of strikes at night . Once running the rig during a big storm and it struck the radio antenna up at the crows nest and part of the antenna fell and missed me by about 3 feet. It was big and would have put the hurt to me big times.

The brightest ever was at night when an electric grid substation 3 or 4 miles away got struck , Brightest blue light I have ever seen. It danced around for quite a while around the fence and between the transformers then everything went dark and all the yard lights for as far as we could see in all directions went out.

Also a big oil tank a mile or 2 away got struck one night . huge ball of fire , fire fighters let it burn itself out.

My cousin in law told about his neighbor who got struck while driving a tractor , I guess when they went to pick him up and load in ambulance the body was like mush like there wasn't a skeleton in there.

This was a direct hit. Looked like what you would see with a lightning rod strike except it was equipment and not a lightning rod. the video was from maybe 1/2 mile away or so. This is also industrial so as far as no evidence of the strike...well take that with the grain of salt as the equipment is definitely not prestine painted surface... I was told this buy the inspecting crew.. I did see the video of the strike itself. I was at the equipment and I couldn't see anything that would indicate a strike but also was not all over it inspecting it either.

Just to get all you're juices flowing for the week. I have been with Nationwide for 9 years with the house and all my vehicles to the tune of over $30,000 in premiums and have never had a claim. I got an e-mail a week ago Wednesday to fill out a survey on how satisfied I was with my claim settlement and the amount of money I recieved and on a scale of 1 to 10 if I would recommend Nationwide to someone else or renew my policies. I gave them a 1 because 0 was not an option. At the end of the survey they asked if I wanted someone from the Co. to give me a phone call. I said YES. Still waiting. I also got a copy of the denied claim paperwork. They had sent their own specialist to evaluate my pickup. The first thing he told the Service writer at Eide was I don't know what the Co. wants me to look for. And in the report was written that Eide wouldn't help him with a battery pack (bring your own damn tools) and the pickup was too full of oil ( the nose of the pickup was on an incline and that my oil was close to end of life ) trying to discredit me. And the photos in the report were not even identifiable as to I couldn't tell what they were trying to point out. LATER

I'd send an email to ND Insurance Dept. explaining the situation in detail, provide dates and weather data and request a meeting or phone call with the Insurance commissioner. He is our public servant and his job it to keep insurance companies honest. I'd also call the agent and ask to speak to the region or state rep for the company and start getting quotes for insurance and make it clear to your agent and rep that this is the route you will be taking if they deny your claim. Pisses me off to no end just to read this. You have more leverage than you might think with this. Keep us posted.

If they lose you they made 30k..if you stay and they pay the claim they are out probably more then the 30k..just saying they probably don't give 2 shits if you leave...I would do as others have said contact insurance commission..when all is settled I would be leaving this company no matter the outcome.

Not pulling the trigger just yet. Still waiting for BO parts at Eide and if there is anymore damage and maybe Eide will find something that proves lightning charge. Not dropping insurance till this is all said and done. A damn waiting game. I bought another 4x4 pickup to get me by till this is all done with so the waiting doesn't hurt so bad.
