Yep I give it 5 years. It will do very little to hurt the way I hunt. I can see it hurting the youth that want to go out and have that opportunity at a deer more often. It's going to make a lot of these so called great hunters look like beginners cause they dont have a massive bait pile at there feet. I say bring it on. In that regards it's not going to help stop the spread of cwd.

Yes for me I may need to go back and try get a rifle tag and then get the dodge set up for the forthcoming wild rides just like in the old days. About 2:00 get the case of beer, turn up the radio and a way we go. Drinking and talking stupidly. My rifle is good for 500 yards (after a few beers it is even good at a 700) and the bow only 20 yards.

Really nan, but that was done a time or two when young and once I got the bow, learn to sit and have the deer come to me, got to understand life a lot better and found all kinds of enjoyment that I never knew as a young stupid kid, learn to love the animals and gave the bucks names (at that time no way could I kill or let the neighbor kill), building food plots and planting more trees, talking to the deer as they came up, helping the wildlife and not killing, I found myself a shamed of the past. I hang my head low for those times.

But if it is no bait for hunting over, a lot of my bait piles are only for the camera and scouting for shed hunting the coming spring. Last year of all the times I sat in one of my stands with the camera only twice did I bring a bow with me. The year before I never brought my bow once. I lost an interest in killing. Meat, its why God made beef cows.

I will adapt as I have adapted to all the personal agenda rules everybody bitches about and gets game and fish to pass.
And in fact this may get rid of a bunch of hunters and those that put there stands within a arrow shot of my stand and make my life more peaceful out there. So go for it, it's just the crabs that this disease came to be and the harm its done. Hopefully in time it runs its course. db

The Pastor was ministering to his congregation about communion. If you have enemies or hold grudges, you should probably skip communion. db stood and said he has no enemies. The Pastor asked, "db, you have no enemies?" db repeated that he has no enemies.

The Pastor asked, "what is your secret?" db replied, "it's because I have outlived every one of those sons-a-bitches."

That's a bait pile. if it's the field I'm thinking of it's an unharvested bean field. Whole lot of bait out there.

Bring the sharpshooters in and kill them all. That will save the deer and take away food and the host for the pinion (whatever it is call).

My first post I wrote was longer but I found I could condence it into two lines.

Deer Found Near Williston Tests Positive for CWD
A white-tailed deer found dead just south of Williston in late February has been confirmed positive for chronic wasting disease, according to Dr. Charlie Bahnson, wildlife veterinarian for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.
“This is unfortunate news because it means CWD is much farther south than the positive deer harvested this past fall in the northwest corner of deer unit 3A1 in Divide County,” Bahnson said.
CWD is a fatal disease of deer, moose and elk that can cause long-term population declines if left unchecked. Since 2009, 14 other deer have tested positive for CWD in North Dakota – 13 from Grant and Sioux counties in hunting unit 3F2 in the southwest, and the other taken last fall from the northwest in Divide County.
The deer found near Williston is the first documented case of a mortality due to CWD in North Dakota.
“All 14 previous detections were perfectly healthy-looking deer that were hunter-harvested before they got sick,” Bahnson said. “This deer was severely emaciated and had an empty digestive tract, which is unusual even in starvation cases that can occur in harder winters like this one. This deer stopped trying to forage some time ago.”
Bahnson said this deer was probably not the first to die of CWD in North Dakota, especially since the disease has been documented in 3F2 for a decade. “But this animal happened to die in an area where it was highly visible, and the carcass could be recovered in time for testing,” he said.
The Game and Fish Department will collect additional samples for testing through targeted removal over the next week or so. In addition to the targeted removal and testing, Game and Fish will review the need to amend the current CWD proclamation to reflect the new CWD positive.
“In other areas of the country where CWD has reached a tipping point, finding sick or dead CWD-infected deer has become common,” Bahnson said. “We need to do everything in our power to ensure that doesn’t happen in North Dakota.”
More information about CWD and regulations regarding CWD are available on the Game and Fish website at gf.nd.gov.

Prions are not a living thing so they can't be killed. Once in place they are there pretty much for good and can infect new animals many many many years later.

wasn't there just a big announcement that prions are not the cause of CWD but byproduct?

Truth is, we know very little about CWD and it's effects or ability to kill. We know very little about it's transmission. We know very little about it's longevity in the environment, we know very little about it's effects on it's hosts, we know very little about it period. What the GnF is using is not science. They are simply banning baiting to appear to be proactive when in fact they know nothing about the disease. Doing something is better than nothing right? That's their take while it cripples a significant amount of hunters in our state. Our GnF puts $0 dollars toward CWD research. Wanna talk about bait banning effectiveness in relation to spread of disease? Look at all the states that have had a baiting ban for the past 10-20 years. It obviously has reduced the spread of the disease...NOT! We have had 15 cases in what...14 years? How about the thousands of deer that die from blue tongue during an outbreak. The biologists response to me was, "well, thats a virus". So what? CWD is a prion... Blue tongue has historically killed way more deer in our state than CWD has ever dreamed about achieving yet that isn't hardly a whisper when it comes to deer management. Our GnF office is weak. It is apparent that they dismiss science or lack of evidence for their own personal opinions/agendas. They mimic other wildlife management offices who have failed miserably at managing their own wildlife within their state. They are so arrogant that they won't even listen to sportsmen/ranchers/farmers when we cry out that our wildlife has been decimated by enviormental factors and continue to issue record numbers of deer tags to help fill their coffers and fund their ridiculous and irresponsible budgets. They turn a blind eye to the irresponsible management of our mule deer herds and the impact that natural predation and bowhunters have on this delicate species. This is government offices operating at their finest. I experienced GnF budget waste. It's all about money to them. The commisioner should be replaced, he clearly has an agenda along with the biologists and cares little for public opinion, betterment of wildlife and sportsman participation. I'm anticipating that the number of available deer tags in the lottery will go up after this winter, wouldn't that be something...

      - - - Updated - - -

"CWD is always fatal"...It sure is, 14 of the 15 positive deer sampled in our state died of lead poisoning. And pretty sure I heard the last deer "found dead that tested positive" was dispatched with a rifle for testing purposes.

One thing to keep in mind is that our Game and Fish are simply employees doing what they are told. We need to look deeper and see who pulls the strings that make them dance. We elect people then they tell public employees where the bear craps in the woods.

When we talk about research we are talking huge expenditures. The equipment would run over a million dollars. I don't think our state Game and Fish has the kind of money to spend on the research needed. That and it would require a half dozen specialists at over $100K even $200K each. A graduate degree doesn't mean finishing eighth grade.

As far as how serious CWD is I don't think we are taking it serious enough. Because we know so little is no reason to do nothing. Are there any of us here really qualified to speak about CWD? I really doubt it. If we knew half as much as some of the posters think they know we would have already cured it and every cancer.

How much did the high fence guys spend on lobbyists to tell our politicians what they want, and in turn tell our Game and Fish what they could and couldn't do? How many people did they sucker into thinking it wasn't important? Who will they blame when everything goes to crap? How many have expressed an opinion to their representatives, and how do we vote? Because of ignorance I predict this problem will not be solved and our deer population now will look like a boom in the future.

Back in 2007 through Executive order, the President instructed the Department of the Interior and Department of Ag to work together getting something done about CWD. It was called the Facilitation of Hunting Heritage and Wildlife Conservation Council. USDA has APHIS (Animal Plant Health Inspection Services) or the laboratories. Good stuff. Our agencies working together.

      But then Obama got elected.
He appointed Sally Jewel head of DOI and Tom Vilsack head of USDA.
      They stacked the Council.
      Here it is:

      https://www.doi.gov/pressreleases/pressreleases/jewell-vilsack-announce-appointments-members-wildlife-and-hunting
The Secretaries announced the appointment of new and returning individuals:

      • Jeffrey Crane (Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation)
      • Whit Fosburgh (Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership)
      • Wayne Hubbard (Urban American Outdoors)
      • Winifred Kessler (The Wildlife Society)
      • Robert Manes (The Nature Conservancy)
      • Frederick Maulson (Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission)
      • Robert Model (Boone and Crockett Club)
      • Miles Moretti (Mule Deer Foundation)
      • Collin O’Mara (National Wildlife Federation)
      • Joanna Prukop (former New Mexico Secretary of Energy, Minerals & Natural Resources)
      • Stephen Sanetti (National Shooting Sports Foundation)
      • Land Tawney (Backcountry Hunters & Anglers)
      • Christine Thomas (College of Natural Resources, University of Wisconsin)
      • George Thornton (National Wild Turkey Federation)
      • John Tomke (Ducks Unlimited)
      • Howard Vincent (Pheasants Forever)
      • Larry Voyles (Arizona Department of Fish and Game)

They never got any new money for CWD research, did nothing for wildlife and spent most of their time like PrairieGhost demonizing farmed elk, deer and exotics. Eight years of that shit.

But you have to love Trump. He dumped this rotten council and replaced it with the Hunting and Shooting Sports Conservation Council:

      Don Peay

Dan Forster Vice President & Chief Conservation Officer, Archery Trade Associations

Mike Budzik former Chief ODNR Division of Wildlife

      John Devney
      Senior Vice President, Delta Waterfowl

Dale Hall CEO of Ducks Unlimited

      Miles Moretti
President & CEO of the Mule Deer Foundation

      Hunter Graham Hill

      Blake Henning
Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Chief Conservation Officer

      Trig French
National Co-Chair NRA Hunters Leadership Forum

      John Green

      Eva Shockey
      Outdoor Channel Host

      Julie Golob
mith & Wesson Pro Shooter and Consultant

David Spady President of the Liberty and Property Rights Coalition

Bob Model, Chairman of the Boone and Crockett Club

      Collin O’Mara
President and CEO, National Wildlife Federation

There are still a few bad actors here but Boards are supposed to be balanced. However, right now there is legislation coming called the Chronic Wasting Disease Transmission in Cervidae Study Act. The Farmed Elk, Deer and Exotics are helping other orgs/agencies push for $15 million for CWD research. All money to research.

I believe we have a real shot at this with David Bernhart at the helm of Department of the Interior and Sonny Purdue at the helm of Department of Ag.

      Thank you Donald J. Trump!!!!!

I called game and fish a month ago and said to them the same thing you said. They did even respond with a letter.
I have no knowledge except what I read and based on that a lot of things being said and done, it does not add up.

Yes those states that have ban baiting we know the end results of that but maybe it would of been worse with baiting.
We know the end results of killing every deer in a area and the end results of that and how it relates to what Dean said about it living in the soil forever.
At the same time I do not feel it is fruitless and there can be answers. I ask game and fish whatever they decide to do make sure one uses some common sense and understand whatever you do there will be a positive and negative effect from that action. There track record of some things has not impress me.

They have the book learning and deal with it, I do not. My work with food plots, trees, ect far exceeds my practice of baiting.
So do I say the hell with it and quit the food plots to and what effect that will have on the deer and I do, in my opinion, leave a lot of food out there for the winter. It is not cheap.
So it is a bad things, I thing we are doing a lot of hit and miss and hope for the best sometimes.

I have not started walking yet up here. I assume I will find a few more dead than previous and it would not surprise me they increase the amount of licenses but maybe they know there are more live deer out than before. I to hope for the best.
If anything there needs to be more research on just what is going on and then maybe we can be smarter with the answers and just not trying whatever to please the public and the anti-baiters but cure the disease. db

It is just like this bill 2315 and the end result. it is a complete waste of time for what it does (IMHO). All it has done is given someone a job and his/her two assistance and an advisory board, monies and put a another brick up on the wall between us citizens of this state.

And then as I look at it I think how I can take advantage of the ruling to further my own personal agenda out there.

But we continue to debate this when it should of never got out of committee. Yes if it was to post all land automatic that is one thing that would accomplish sometime ( yes I would be against this) but this does nothing. db
