Ya I might have tuned a reef runner or everyone that I have ever ran. It's not rocket science

I cannot catch a cold with flickers. I can run a reef runner on 1 rod and a flicker on the other and get bit on tbe reef runner 10 to 1. I guess it is a confidence thing and I have few problems tuning them.

Have not used the Berkley slow death hooks, like the Mustads and a little tag end on the knot

You need to use small quick snaps on flickers.

Handy dandy crank tuning tools are worth it for the Reefrunners. Pliers sucked.. once tuned, they are kinda really good.

is this a slow death hook thread or cranks thread?

But it was fun. Hijack over

I asked a question about the barb on the Berkley death hooks......silence......Then someone started slamming Berkley, and then some questionable stats on their cranks. Im not a Berkleyrep but they make some products worth buying. So technically its a Berkley vs Mustad thread not just a death hokk thread.

And while Reef Runner ripshads are a pain to tune, knce tuned are a great bait. Biggest walleye this year was on one Monday.

Riphads are by far my favorite's. Speaking of slow death hooks, I also like the crawler hauler hooks from northland. They hold the crawler well. The plastic barb does eventually wear out though. Hi quality hooks with a very nice Barb

flicker shads are not a new shape/action concept. I have a ton of cranks. Many are thirty years old. I have older cranks that are nearly identical. I haven't caught fish on any of my cranks consistently or as often as I have on reef runners. It's not even close. Last count I had over four hundred cranks so you can about imagine the different ones I've thrown at these damn fish over the years. I used to fish about 400 hours a year lol. Some people can tune cranks some can't. Just like some people can fish with boards, some can't. They all can/will go out of tune. Some more often than others. Cranks going out of tune means your catching fish lol. I even have some of the original metal lipped Hot N Tots that's how old I am haha

I use the soft plastic crawlers for the slow death hooks and have not seen ANY less bites. Plus, it stays on the hook much better and lasts WAY longer than a real crawler. They do make the shorter ones for this but I usually put a whole one on the hook and clip off the excess.

Do you notice a difference with color/brand of plastic? I am guessing probably a 3" to 4" crawler?

Yes, Flickers can be finicky SOBs. Very rarely do I not have to tune them. But they definitely are tuneable. The hooks are VERY sharp. Just weak. Issue is gottabe careful with replacement hooks as they just don't seem to swim the same with heavier hooks.

I bought some Berkley slow roll to see how they work. They are heavy duty which may require more speed but maybe the design counters the weight. Mustads are weak, they bend. I bought some 1/0 so hoping that helps. Got some trokars to try as well.

I have learned - in my short 30 day crank trolling career, that you also need to check hooks and hook attachments as well - not just the nose-eye angle.

It seems that they have to be pristine all around in order for them to run true - and flickers seem the finickiest.

A single bent hook of the three on a treble can throw things off. As well as a rotated or bent front hook attachment eye on a flicker for instance.

Also - using a large quicksnap on a smaller crank is asking for tuning headaches. Devil is in the details with tuning cranks IMO. Once you get that hammered into your head it's pretty easy peasy.

i must not know what i am looking at as i have tuned a few flicker shads and that is after the hook was bent straight and i bent it back. I never have lines tangles i am always catching fish on them what am i missing. the reef runners turn circles run upside down and 34 feet of to the side when out of tune. I have never had any flicker shad do that. i fish with a few guys who also have not tuned but a few flickers and they fish for a living

I find I have to tune flicker shads/minnows fairly regularly, some out of the box and some after a fish or snag. The price is right and they catch fish, but definitely require more maintenance than Rapala or Salmo. Anyone have a recommendation for good replacement hooks for these that run the same as factory?

Would be interested to know how the Berkeley Slow Roll hooks work. The Mustad's work great, but like Tim said they do bend.

interesting - what line do you use? I may spool some up! sometimes line diameter is key.

I have way more issues with Flicker 5cm than the 7cm.

flickers don't go far off to the side when they are out of tune - they spin tiny tight circles or run on their sides out maybe 5-6 feet (but stay shallow letting you know they currently suck)

Yeah, some are good out of the box and can't go wrong. Others like to do the side run or the barrel roll. I can tune them now, but I usually reach for another one when in the heat of a bite. I tie direct(flouro leader), but always tie to the little gap in the split ring. That seems to help a lot.

i only use the 7 or 9 and use 10 pound fire line and use the fire line also as my leader on the lead. small crank snap.

I am a shallow water specialist. 7's are "going deep" for me - ha ha ha

I think hunting carp all my teenhood programmed me to think shallow - which is great until you are on a lake where shallow means top-to-bottom weeds or stringy moss. I am then in BIG trouble.
