I am a shallow water specialist. 7's are "going deep" for me - ha ha ha

I think hunting carp all my teenhood programmed me to think shallow - which is great until you are on a lake where shallow means top-to-bottom weeds or stringy moss. I am then in BIG trouble.

the lead core line like this.

I use a 10 ft leader with a high quality barrel swivel that fits through the eyes of the rod. I like the 10' to 14' foot rods as planner boards are a last resort.

Oh - leadcore!

I read "lead" as the word "leed" - so I read it as typed below and was quite confused!

and use the fire line also as my leeder on the leed

At least tuning cranks gives you something extra to do over pulling bottom bouncers

Also.... both the Bismarck and Dickinson Runnings have all their Reef Runners at 5.99 per, no matter model or size.

i must not know what i am looking at as i have tuned a few flicker shads and that is after the hook was bent straight and i bent it back. I never have lines tangles i am always catching fish on them what am i missing. the reef runners turn circles run upside down and 34 feet of to the side when out of tune. I have never had any flicker shad do that. i fish with a few guys who also have not tuned but a few flickers and they fish for a living
where most people miss the boat on the reef runners is they don't understand that they naturally go back and forth from left to right. They will veer left a few feet then back right a few feet then back and forth. Before you put them out you have to let 5-10' of line out and drop it in the water. hold it steady and watch what it does. If it veers off to one side and stays there it's out of tune. You have to bend the eyelet the direction it went off to. You can easily see if it's not perpendicular to the lip if you look down the lip. If they are out of tune they can take a few times to get it right. but if you don't get a back and forth action it's not right. Over time it becomes simple and quick to set em. Every time you catch a fish you need to check em. Most times they will be fine. but they can go un-tuned any time you catch a decent sized fish or snag up hard. But it's really rather easy.

another thing. never tie line directly to the eyelet. it can screw the action of the lure up. especially those without a snap ring. use a duo-fast snap. 7/16" -1/2" long. After years of dicking around with different line I have settled on 10lb braided with no leader. I set my drags very light. Use the clicker and set it so you can pull the drag rather easily. While running boards I set the drags out to the point the board will start to take line then slowly tighten it till it barely stops. In fact in big waves with the surges the boards will sometimes take a couple clicks of drag. This is very important when using braided line cranking. I had many trebles straightened by fish with braided line and drags too tight. Or hooks ripped right out of mouths and had meat on the hook when you reeled em in.

I was talking about flicker shad tuning reef runners are easy to see what need to be tuned. Leadcore, fireline, mono, clip weights, in lines they are all in the toon and have used them all at different times so I think I have the basic principles of trolling down. Now pulling inside lake bends of the old river channel at 1.8 mph in 70 ft of water 1 ft over the trees in 3ft waves like Jason p did down here last year I struggle with.
