I think the scholarships are paid for by donations to and funds raised by Teammakers.

What we should be doing is weekly piss tests on anybody that is receiving a scholarship. After all it is our tax dollars providing that education.

Whoa there Eye - those scholarships and the $3400 stipend for living expenses are supported 100% by the Team Makers and the Alumni Association - not one dime of tax dollars goes to athletic scholarships or the stipend. So unless you are a member of either of those organizations you don't have a horse in the race.

Not sure why people are so up in arms about this. These kids broke some team rules and are being held accountable for their actions. This is how things are supposed to work, unlike when bohl was in charge and kids got caught forging signatures for a ballot measure. Glad to see ndsu has a coach now that expects his players to follow the rules and if they don’t, they are held accountable. Hats off to the coach.

Point is, the taxpayers and students are subsidizing UND and NDSU athletics big time. May not be funding scholarships and athlete living expensed, but its all a shell game. Both schools lose big money when it comes to funding athletics, and where does the money come from to keep the athletic programs going?
Time to move these precious athletic programs off campus, if they are truly wanted and loved by the public they will make money and all you sports nuts can still cheer for the Bison or Sioux. Our priorities are ridiculously out of order.........
In fact, every sport in 2016 at UND and North Dakota State University spent more money than they brought in.
And, yes, that includes UND men's hockey and NDSU football, the crown jewels of college athletics in North Dakota.
Both programs ran significant deficits, according to the annual financial report each school is required to send to the NCAA. NDSU football had revenues of $4.5 million and expenses of $4.7 million, coming up about $201,000 short. UND men's hockey had total operating revenue of $4.3 million and expenses totaling $4.5 million, a loss of about $163,000.

These kids have an incredible opportunity to go to school for free and come out with very little or no debt. It could help set them up for their entire lives.

The fact they can't keep out of trouble for a few years while in college is their own fault, and I think the consequences are fair. I sure would have loved an opportunity like this!

No matter what you think about weed, the fact of the matter is that it is currently illegal for recreational use in ND.

There may be a few but I doubt it covers all those on NDSU/UND's teams.

I'd have a hard time believing that. How many are on scholarship on that team?

Per NCAA rules, schools and their subsequent sports only have so many full ride scholarships to give out. That's why some are on half/quarter rides. Anything else needed would be from the alumni association. Being a collegiate athlete is not easy. Those men and women have practice, regular classes, and mandatory tutoring sessions that need to be fit into one day.

Am I following the thread correctly, NDSU is losing money on football even though Teammakers / Alumni Assoc. pay for all scholarships and cost of living? Does UND do the same for Hockey?

- - - Updated - - -

I thought I read somewhere that football FCS roster is limited to 102 players with 63 scholarships divided amongst no more than 80 individual players.

that's my point. I have a hard time buying those associations are paying the tuition for 63 scholarships and monthly stipend on top of it.

ah yea. ever seen some of the shit our tax dollars are spent on? So given lunkers numbers, and another above stating the $3400 a month stipend, the associations are coming up with around 3.3 million a year for these players. And that's just football. Have a hard time believing that.

I believe it, not only are the taxpayers bailing out the money losing athletic programs via the General Fund, but so are students through increase "student fees"

And now they want to tap the Legacy fund to subsidize the shortfalls at our Universities.......... something needs to change, a good start would be to reign in the ridiculous spending on sports and athletics on campus.

If we exclude institutional aid and student fees, which are rather conveniently counted as “revenues” for these programs, we see that overall the school’s sports programs lost over $13.3 million even after counting money from things like ticket sales, merchandising deals, and broadcast arrangements.

On an non-athletic related note, ever see what the salaries are of some of the higher ups in the NDUS?? Read an article in the paper the other day about the vice president of some dam thing making like 275k, the boss she's suing for wrongful termination is making well north of 300k. I realize we want educated, smart people running the show, but come on man. There is a reason that cost of education continues to rise, and it dam sure's got nothing to do with getting a better education.

Shortly Carson Wentz will write a check like that him self for a tax write off. 3.3 million is not that much in the grand scheme of things. Look how many illumni from each school lots of money there

haven't heard about that. what's that all about

that's a new record. meaning they never raised that much before. so how did they pay those scholarships/stipends for all those years before this?
