by the grace of God I have never suffered this (as the backer... I have witnessed it and it’s not good)

I've helped a few that weren't too proud. Got told to pretty much eff off one time as he jackknifed the spare tire into back of the pickup. Funny stuff if you are not waiting. Saw some of this at the Rainy early season. The kicker(in the video)would have been if he finally got the boat in and it wouldn't start.

While fishing on Lake Minnetonka a few years back, I was backing my friend's boat trailer into the water to load the boat up for the evening. The ramp went steep really fast near the water and I lost sight of the trailer quickly and over-corrected. I pulled forward got it straightened out and into the water just fine, but it took me two or three times due to the steep drop off.

There were two sides to dock from and the guy in front of me was a high school kid. Same scenario. HUGE brand new Ford Expedition, nice, shiny Ranger boat. He gets pissed, hollars something then moves to the other side once that boat was out of the way. He arrogantly RUSHES the trailer in under the boat while just staring at me. As he slams on the gas to leave the water, he forgets about the aforementioned STEEP drop off. He had left the lower unit tilted all the way down and didn't trim it up. WHAM!!!! Right into the concrete with the motor. Sparks flew, broken prop, the works. My friend and I had a good laugh as we thought about how he was going to explain that impatience created this mess.

I dropped the wife off at the dock once. She was going to back the trailer in. She is still new to it. It can usually take multiple attempts.

This time, she nailed it!!! Backed it in perfect and smooth! I was in the boat, watching with awe. Once loaded I was pretty excited to give her mad kudos, when all of a sudden, some old dude popped out of the truck. hahahaha
She had some random fella on shore back it in for her.

Witnessed someone realize they didn't have the plug in (after the boat was off the trailer) then after getting in the water to put the plug in they found out their battery was dead and the boat wouldn't start!

watched a guy dump his new tyee with a shiny mercury 150 on the ramp at Audubon years ago. He had a roller trailer and his buddy unhooked it at top of ramp before backing in....whoops... The sound of that lower unit hitting the concrete was worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. Totaled!

Watched the same thing in Santa Cruz years ago during salmon season. The boat owner was in the boat and his buddy was backing him into the water. I was tied to the dock waiting for my buddy to park the truck/trailer. I think the owner in the boat figured out that he hadn't put the plug in. He hollered to his buddy to STOP and his buddy did STOP ... and launched his salmon boat onto the ramp from a trailer with bunks about 5 feet short of the water.

One of my favorite stories to tell about my wife. When we were first dating about 11 years ago I decided to buy a boat. I have grown up on the river and had been backing the trailer in for my Father for a while and thought maybe I should teach my GF how to do this. Long story short she wasn't going to back the boat and trailer in. So I figured she can learn how to drive the boat on the trailer. I let her practice pulling up on the sand bars aiming for certain marked spots and aiming the nose of the boat at them. She figured out how to manipulate the current to her advantage and I figured she should give it a try finally on memorial day weekend. Well I hopped out of the boat and said today is the day you earn your wings. Her reply was TODAY! There was a loaded parking lot at merriweathers boat ramp. The river was busy as it could be and a lot of waves to throw her off while pulling up. I back in and hopped onto the dock to giver her a hand. A few decent waves hit the boat but she put that boat spot on first try. I didnt even have to crank it up just hooked up. The person on the other side looks at me and asks if that is my wife? I replied no. Just my current Gf. He said I have been married to that thing sitting in the truck for 25 years (his wife)and not once has she offered to back in the trailer or pull the boat on. He looked me square in the eyes and said that one is a keeper bud and you need to marry that one. I took his advice and about 7 years later I did.

Early 60's loud-mouth entitled ass runs his boat into the courtesy dock, ahead of the "line" of boats waiting to use same. The reason there's a "line" waiting is because it's a bit lumpy getting in/out. Loud-mouth runs it in at an odd angle, hollers at at least 2 boats who kind of pin him in. He misses the dock while swinging the bow twice. On the 3rd try, he hammers reverse as his partner steps out and partner goes in the drink. Loudmouth puts boat in neutral, drifts up over top of fishing partner, bonks the dock, partner pushes the bow out of the way and there's a full-on grumpy old man argument. Wet guy goes to get the truck/trailer. Loud-mouth parks his boat such that both lanes of the double-wide ramp are blocked while he's waiting. Wet guy couldn't back up a Radio Flyer by hand, much less a boat trailer with a pickup. It looks like the trailer is magnetically repelled by water or something. Every time he gets it close, he jackknifes it like he's trying to keep the tires dry. Loud-mouth in the boat is screaming his fool head off. Poor wet trailer non-backer-upper gets out and with a couple more guys jerks the trailer kinda straight and gets it wet enough to get loud-mouth's boat on. Loud-mouth is loud-mouthing and wet non-backer-upper dude proceeds to pull the boat out and drag the skeg halfway from the ramp to the cleaning station @ Graham's Island before loud-mouth gets loud enough to make him stop.

I was laughing myself to tears so I left and didn't get to see the aftermath of the freshly ground skeg.

Ground skeg is a tough meal to swallow and a lot of $$$ per pound.

I see the "back down to the water and unload" maneuver quite often. Frustrating but not day-ruining type stuff. As often as I launch by myself, only one person as offered to park my pickup or even ask for help. Either I'm not very approachable or I look like I know what I'm doing. Just a couple of weeks ago, I did get to help an older gentleman at the Merriwether ramp. This high water has turned that place into a headache for single person launching.
