that would use all your UBI for a few decades no doubt...I'd like to place my order for 17 free tons of gold today, thanks!

I get that, but in the past we had human labor producing goods. Its something that could go poorly I admit, but im leaning towards optimistic at this point. When the majority of good are produced by machines that can work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, I could see a future where UBI might provide way more than basics, at least in countries that can afford to transition rapidly. That kind of goes to prove my point. Elon can talk about AI and robots doing all these things, but the reality is a Universal Basic Income existence sucks. We already have plenty of examples of this in some form when you take a look at what we did to the Native Americans. The fed government said if you go peacefully to the reservations, we'll feed, house you, and take care of your medical needs.
I am not a fan of the government playing that role again with an even larger part of our society.
But damned if I wouldn't take a log of government cheese every now and then! IYKYK
I think you're overly optimistic. It's been proven a number of times in various populations that when the motivation to be productive is removed, that population suffers in a number of ways. Some picture a world where everyone is on vacation, living their best life. Human nature seems to indicate a global slum filled with rampant alcohol and drug abuse is far more likely.I get that, but in the past we had human labor producing goods.
