By the way, most people don't know there's a winter/summer mode on some chainsaws. I stumbled upon it when I was modifying the muffler on my Farm Boss. Had to dig out the manual to see what it was. The sun/snowflake symbols suggested what it was.

It's a little plastic piece that routes warmed air into the carb for winter mode, blocks the warm air in summer. Around 50F is when you swap.
really owned stihls for 30 years never seen this

I've had 2 stihl chainsaws that didn't have the winter summer plastic door. when I bought a professional grade ms261 it has. It could be because my other two are 14 plus years old
Mine is an MS290 I bought maybe 15 yrs ago.

I'm not sure which units have it - but Stihl claims running the summer position in winter can cause it to run lean and eff things up.

If anybody else gets sick/tired of fogged up safety glasses, buy these and paint the inside of the mesh with a light coat of flat black. Miraculous. Not true safety glasses of course - but they're great for sawing IMO.

I'm not sure which ones it's on but I'm guessing it could just be professional saws.

One thing I didn't mention when I sharpen my chain it takes me 5 minutes. Put the bar in a vise sharpen the one side turn it the other way sharpen the other side

Has anyone tried a carbide chainsaw blade ? Seems like they should stay sharp a long time. The carbide tooling I've used has been far superior to steel.

Rescue crews use them. I looked into them and I recall (maybe wrongly) the issue is that you can’t sharpen them easily - so I bailed.

Picked up a 3-pack of Stihl files and a file handle for about $10 at Runnings after watching this video. Now I have a sharp chain and a new skill. Need some practice but got it much sharper on the first attempt.
This is spot on! I had a 14" Mcculloch, a 16" Stihl and an 18" Blue Max. Used the hand file multiple times on each of them at our lake lot in the woods in northern MN. Disclaimer..I did bring back to NAPA for a more professional job when I could but I did use the hand file when I was in need.

Back in the day we cut many truck loads of wood.
There is nothing to sharpening your old chainsaw. Set it on the pickup tailgate and get the correct size file, and it a few minutes it is sharp and ready to cut some more.
