We're officially changing our plans. Heading to the Shitties tonight, coming back Saturday evening. Short and sweet and then spending Christmas Day and Monday at home in Fargo. Even if this storm stays further west, I'm just not keen on driving through ice and snow or their aftermath...especially with little kiddos.

Bright side, if this doesn't mess us up too bad, I may get a post-Christmas rooster shoot in after all! Fingers crossed.

I used to make the run when i didnt have kids and maybe a time or two when i did. But looking at the crazy accidents and people driving like nuts it isnt worth it. Two jackknifed trucks near tappen, snow, my dad in front of me with his pickup he knew one of the truck drivers they both got out and talked. Were both parked halfway off the interstate as far off as one could go without gettting stuck waiting for the semis to clear say 20-or 30 cars are all parked waiting. In bound same direction comes a blue plate duck hunter skids hits my dads door as my dad was climbing back into his truck lucklily my dad didnt get hurt and the blunt of the crash was extended portion of the cab. Wake up call - from that point on i said no thanks --- 80+ mile per hour blue place with a decoy trailer into a blocked road of semis visibility was a mile -- fnk crazy people. Imo it gets worse every year - nobody gives a $hit for life anymore its all about me.

My two cocktails of choice are Brandy/Pepsi or Brandy/Cider, mixed roughly 50/50.

Brandy water I have not tried. However, I'm all about elevating my status in life...

Ive never seen it. Even when the interstate is closed you can still usually travel between bis and mandan on it.

That's what we were talking about with many people have not experience and/or forgot what it's like to ride out a full on blizzard due to it having been 20 years ago this April since we had one. The last one was so bad they didn't get the side streets open to one lane traffic till midweek and I do mean one lane not one in each direction. That storm had a ton of wind but almost no snow on the ground so wasn't near as bad as it could have been but the emergency managers of Bismarck had to make a call on the news looking for people with snowmobiles to help get doctors to the aid of people who were having medical emergency. Ambulances couldn't get through due to all the snow on the road and all the vehicles stuck buried to their roofs in that same snow! the main road running around the capitol look like a flipping parking lot for days. Homes in north west mandan were buried to and in some cases above their roofs and more then one car got its driver side remodeled when they brought in front end loaders to clear the streets that had 10 feet of snow in them. the loader operators couldn't see the cars until they hit them. Point is we have allot of people that could get themselves in real trouble because they haven't seen or have forgotten the true Wrath that mother nature can dish out here in North Dakota even if your in town. A couple shots from 97 the mall shot should give you an idea why expressway didn't stay open and remember there was basically no snow before this storm hit!

OH and don't mention the year 1966 or you will have the older guys show you some real crazy shit!





This one may be from a different area it was claimed to be mandan and or somewhere in IA. Either way there was allot of this and allot that were worse up by seven seas that spring.

Does not seem like that storm was 20 years ago in my head. I still remember it fondly. I was on the farm yet and my dad hurt his back as we had to find and carry all our calves and get them in the barn in the middle of the night.. It was a bad deal. Lots of work for a 17 year old kid during calving season I know that. Out in the middle of nowhere ND it was bad. I don't think we had school for a week because nobody could get anywhere. I remember my grandpa getting lost going to his house from the barn. All of about 150 feet away. Pretty soon he comes in our house, which was 100 ft a different direction, and said he had no idea where he was until he got there all he could see was a light and walked toward it. He was lucky. I remember blowing snow with the tractor for 7 hours just to get out of yard and to the cows to be able to feed.

96/97 was terrible. I have friends who couldn't get all their cows out of their pastures, the first storm hit right at the end of October. Muddy, snowy, messy, they got as many hauled as they could. They tried to get feed to the rest and get the roads open but winter just kept pouring on. The storm right before Christmas was the last straw. It pretty much buried them. The shot many on Christmas eve with only their heads sticking out of the snow. Terribly sad. They are still haunted by it today, they say the smell of a shot .22 shell in the cold flashes them back to that day each and every time they smell it.

I hope this storm doesn't live up to predictions. My neck of the woods in northern SD already has plenty of snow. Hail hurt the birds bad this year and the deer and just now getting back going from EHD.

Jr2280 Oh I hear you there I still remember not only the storm but the day before because I was out at fish Creek open water fishing and the weather was gorgeous with highs the must have been or atleast seemed close to 70. It had been a long winter and it was an awesome day both weather wise and we slamed the trout by casting out to the ice and reeling in till the bobber and line dropped of the edge and man those trout were on it in no time. Then we got the thunder storm that changed midstorm to snow and it was game on from there! Remember I had to stand on the snow in the driveway and break up the three feet of snow that was above the snow blower my dad was using. Took a couple hours to clear half of it at which point us and our nahbors who lived on the east side of the street went across to help the people on west side because they up to 12 feet of snow drifted on the lee side of their homes. I would be cool with another one of those storms.... Figure if we are going to kill off wildlife may as well do it in style!

Ahhh the spring of '97 and the Red River flood, was only in junior high but definitely a time I will not forget. Was sandbagging for hours a day for many days leading up to it and was actually working on one of the sandbag dikes when it failed in EGF, luckily was only a few blocks from home. Had to be picked up at our house by the national guard as there was too much water in the streets and all ways out of our end of town (known as the point) were underwater and taken to an area with a little higher ground to be choppered out.

Well considering everyone is expecting a big one so that means we have ourselves the classic setup for a big miss!

Yeah, at this point I would almost be disappointed if we got missed. I am hoping to get out and do a little hunting Sat - Monday.

I LOVE hunting in crappy weather. It just seems to enhance not only my success, but the overall story.

Yeah I'm hoping it's a good one. We already did Christmas yesterday so my sister can get out of here Friday instead of Monday like was planned so she could beat the storm as she plays chicken with it on her way home to Denver. Allen do they have good pics out at the office of the 97 blizzard? Easy to find shots of 66 but 97 are few and far between.
