watch your downwind, sit with the terrain to your advantage.



This is also key. If a coyote can get downwind of you by utilizing terrain where you cannot see for even a little while, that's where he'll go. Great technique is to have a buddy downwind watching those out of sight areas. Kind of the same technique as calling elk.

It's been a tough year so far, I usually have my dead pole full at least once by now, we've put a severe dent in the population the last few years but what I normally haven't had to do was get into their space. Listen at sundown where they are and use the right wind to get close and call pretty soft. Mix it up and go where the deer are, we've killed around a dozen so far with fawn distress and a broken deer decoy.

I have learned that it hurts my chances by sitting in the same spot and calling for more than a few minutes. I call and move constantly. Have a lot better luck catching them by chance that way and keeping low and keeping a keen eye out for movement. This took me many years to figure out but have had tons better luck doing this than calling from the same spot for too long.

Five minutes would be a long sit for me. I hunt very hilly terrain with a fair amount of cover in most cases. Usually Oliver / Morton counties and some in Burleigh. If they don't come charging and I have to try and coax them in which I usually find rarely works I go into spot and stock mode and use the terrain to my advantage. Unless they have been spooked i can usually get within good shooting distance of them without being detected. I am in good physical condition and so i can cover a lot of ground myself pretty easily.

When the coyotes in my area get used to "regular" calling I use a different call or call pattern.

There are a ton of guys using the same electronic calls with the same patterns so I use something different. I've been having good luck with a couple of old (70's) Circe mouth calls lately.

Love those 70s Circe - do they still make the reeds?

Mine always froze up on me between calls - too dumb to put them in a warm pocket.

I use some old Faulks predator hand calls i received from my old man. I dont get out alot but have had success with them. Pretty fun stuff but man a guy can get winded blowing on them calls
