Reason I ask this is because I see state trooper cruisers driving in the left lane all the time. I'm sure its for traffic management purposes if they clock some oncoming vehicle they can whip around quicker but they are often not even cruising at the speed limit. I thought I remembered some form of legislation go through regarding this. But if it is illegal to impede traffic and a highway patrol man isn't doing the speed limit and causing a problem, isn't he breaking the law?

Class A emergency vehicles are exempted from most state traffic laws while performing official duty, so I would say they are not breaking the law. Having said that I would hope they would set a good example and when they see faster traffic approaching they would move into the right lane or make sure that traffic has the ability to pass them on the right.

I pretend it is nascar and run up behind the slowpokes, the big time drivers call it areo push but it will speed up the car in front of you. Kind of hard on the old ladies nerves though,

Kinda hard on both cars when a deer jumps out in front of the lead car. I slam on my brakes for all they are worth , I have been in 4 car accidents in all of my miles, All 4 were deer.

Common sense and using your mirrors go a lonnnng way, never be in a hurry to jolt back in front of a passed car.. Use the NOS; so to speak ,if you have to gain a nice biggg lead and ease back into your initial speed that you were going which made you pass them in the first place. (Annnd for god's sake, pay attention to the solid yellow lines for everybody's sake, they are not there for decoration.)
If you're smart enough, using common courtesy comes easy and if you have a lead foot, consistently changing lanes wayyy more often than you have to be (again using your mirrors) is actually more dangerous due to your blind spot failing you on a "number's risk rate percentage."

Almighty pet peeve of mine: those that you're fast approaching on to pass, pull out in front of you to pass the vehicle in front of them and dont speed up in the process while doing so and clogging up the passing lane!! (If i see someone fast approaching in my mirror to eventually/quickly pass me and i approach a slower moving vehicle in front of me, i will either gun it to "exceed" their speed or let off and stay put so the vehicle behind me doesnt even have to let off their cruise, decelarate, or the worst; tap on their brakes!) Again just common courtesy via experience.. Pretty simple stuff, but good topic to inform!
On the other hand, not sure if there's even hope for canadian drivers or moreso certain others i will not mention!!

on two lane roads, i believe its a law that you leave enough room between you and the car in front of you for anyone passing you to safely get back in the right hand lane between you and the car in front of you.

In Grand forks on demers going downtown towards cabelas on Eastside. It's the same problem with no dedicated left turn Lane green arrow. So I just pull out it middle of the intersection and when everyone has already passed by on a RED light I turn left. Traffic can get so bad that cars could be backed up into the traffic lanes going east and west. You have to drive aggressively just like all the other drivers

People cruising in the left lane are a hazard plain and simple. If you want to cruise there at least have the common courtesy to pull over to the right when someone wants to pass. GIANT pet peeve of mine on my morning commute in the Bakken.

Why cant you PASS on the right? How is driving in the left lane a hazzard? Its easier to pass on the right when the driver is on the left side of the car anyway.... I drive in whatever lane is smoothest, but I usually cruise a good bit over speed limit so pass more people than pass me.

In Def. Driving they actually encourage you NOT to dim on a divided highway. Anytime you dim on a higher speed divided highway you end up over driving your headlights. In other words, you wouldn't be able to see something ahead of you within your stopping distance. Properly adjusted high beam headlights while being a bit bright won't blind the other driver like on a two lane highway.

I never dim my lights on divided highways unless it is to flash back at some jackhole thats flashing me because he doesnt like my bright lights.... It is a hazard to drive at 83mph at night with your low lights on. Its amazing that I get flashed the most on interstate by Semi drivers who you would think would know the rules.

I love the goobs who are doing a good 5-10 faster than you come up and ride yer arse for miles, finally figure out you are not going to go faster and they get in the left lane just east of Bismarck and finally finish passing as you both enter Al-Fargobad.

Check you headlight alignment, they are factory set for an empty vehicle any load or a trailer can change this dramatically. I turned mine down and to the right slightly end of trucks flashing me.

Must be an older vehicle as all mine that are 04 or newer GM have only up and down adjustment. Pulling a trailer it would be nice to have self leveling ones, pretty sure they would not be cheap.

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - The speed limit on I-94 and I-29 will be changing on Aug. 1. The process to update the road signs is about to begin.

Kirk Hoff is the design engineer at the North Dakota Department of Transportation. He said the process is rather simple and shouldn’t impact traffic too much.

“It’ll be just traffic control; I think they’ll have a shoulder closure,” said Hoff. “Most of them, we’re simply taking a sign down and placing the 80 up.”

The process has technically already started, with some speed limits already reduced in some areas. But while that process has been easy, they had to think about what to do around areas with rougher terrain.

“We do have a few areas of concern where the horizontal curves don’t meet 80 miles an hour, particularly in the Badlands area,” said Hoff. “We’ll put it at 70 miles an hour through the Badlands.”

They also had some concerns around the more urbanized areas, where there is heavier traffic merging and diverging.

We don’t want to go to 80 miles an hour there, so we’ll put it at 70 miles an hour through those communities, and the communities that will be added to that would be Dickinson, Jamestown, Valley City and Grand Forks,” said Hoff.

Once the speed limit changes officially on Aug. 1, the 3D Specialties company will be installing the new signs.

The process is estimated to take about two weeks.

Why the F did they even increase the limit??

No shit , the legislator should have never passed it and the Gov should have never signed it , Dont understand it, So with the above the speed limit dropped in those areas ? Looks like speed traps to me . Did I miss something here

The curves and on-ramp / off ramps are maybe not engineered for merging traffic at 85 MPH in those areas, which is what it’s going to be. Guess we’ll have to tap the brake 3 or 4 times while traversing the state. Many won’t, wrecks will happen, and we’ll see this bill revisited. Calling it now.
