Pluckem, I don't get to Bismarck very often, but if you put the head in the freezer, it can wait until you get out this way or find someone that's passing through here.[/QUOTE]

I travel between Fargo and Bismarck a fair amount, depending on the month, and could possibly be able to help you out and with delivery

Couple questions,

1 how long will the beetle colonies last and how often does one need to "feed" them (in between seasons)?

2. what are you using to get the nice white color peroxide? Does that brittle the skulls?

We are doing the old boil method and scrape and clean for a couple hours , some times the pressure washer. Wondering if the beetles are worth it. After we get them cleaned up we paint them with a Rustoleum clean metal primer to give them that faded in the weather look.

They turn out nice but quite a bit of work. Have to get the kid to show me how to post a pic.

gst, the colony is self sustaining and as long as you keep giving them food and water, they can go on for as long as you want. Our colony is kept fed on a constant basis. If we don't have a skull to do, we put any meat we have. I saved a bunch of goose gizzards that we can use when skulls get scarce, but snaring season in upon us here so I should have plenty of coyote skulls to keep the colony happy. During the summer months we've used fish that I've caught as well as road kill raccoons, skunks, and whatever else looks good that doesn't require a tag.

We use a peroxide solution that comes in a paste form that we spread on and then rinse off. Doesn't seem to make the bone too brittle as we've had to put screws through the bone to attach them to plaques. The teeth seem to be a problem sometimes as they can fall out if you're not paying attention. The small beetle larvae clean the tissue out even the most narrow of spaces.

I had the pleasure of meeting KDM and his old man today as well as seeing their set up. They've got plenty of beautiful work to show off. Cant wait to get my skull back next week.

I will most likely be heading back there from Bismarck next wens and could help with delivering a skull if someone needed. You would have to find a way to get it back though.

have you tried any fish yet?

Yep!! Boney fishes like northerns fall apart when the beetles eat the tissue between the bone plates and between the jaws. So.......there needs to be some reconstruction and puzzle putting together to get a finished product, which I will admit I'm NOT the best at. We tried a 20 lb northern and promptly LOST about a third of the skull as the beetles carried the pieces away and buried them in the floor material never to be seen again as I don't really want to dig around in that stuff. When we try again, we will have to make some kind of metal mesh bag or something to keep all the parts together. We have successfully done 3 paddle fish skulls though. They turned out pretty good if I do say so myself.

I had the same pleasure, just met KDM's old man. Very interesting hobby, awesome bug cage for watching the process, and lots of good info! We're trying our hand at a hobby colony ourselves. Thanks again KDM!

How much for paddlefish? Still have my wife's in the freezer from May.

I'll ask my Dad on the paddle fish. There is quite a bit of preparation on those and we have to cut off as much of the flesh as possible. There is so much oil in those fish that we have to make provisions in the colony to keep the oil from contaminating the whole bedding complex for the beetles. I'll PM you. Thanks!!!

From what I saw, paddlefish are some of coolest skulls and these guys have practice doing it!

I'm not one to tell a guy how to run his beetle business, but I'd just set up a trail cam and set it to take a pic every few hours.

We could do that as the colony is in a Plexiglas box you can see right through. With the weather being what it is, we might do that.

Glad you like it Ericb!!

how about a buffalo head?

Give me the dimensions of the head and I'll check to see if that would even fit into the colony. A weight wouldn't hurt either. If it'll fit and won't bust the cage, I'll get back to you.
