I have given the thought of getting a bulk tank for gas at home but shelling out a grand almost per fill freaks me out.

Yeah, Lbrandt, the initial outlay was hard to take years ago, n\but the wife and I have a system. We use a coffee can and pay for the gallons as we use them, then when it's time to reload, we have the cash on hand. 560 gallon tank.

gonna see $100 oil by mid to late summer. 60 rigs drilling now and will no doubt keep going up. It still amazes me that people think there is no profit margin selling gasoline lol.

You know what pisses me off about gas prices is that currently Crude is selling on Nasdaq for $71 and some change and gas price averages are right around $2.80 per gallon. Let's think about this for a second. The summer between '08 and '09 Crude was $140 a barrel and gas prices averaged $4 a gallon. Let's do just some simple math and double the price of $71 currently and gas prices should be $5.60 per gallon at the rate it was back in '08 and '09 according to the current price of crude and current price of gas right now. How in the hell does this work, nobody really knows. I have a gas receipt from this past September when Crude was selling on Nasdaq for $50 per barrel and gas prices were $2.19 per gallon...that would have been $0.044 on $1 a barrel. Now it is currently $20 per barrel more and costs 60 cents a gallon for gas more. Now, if I do the math correctly for every $1 increase the price of gas should increase by $0.03 per gallon. That means when Crude was at $140 per barrel the price should have been $4.20 per gallon, pretty close. Let's do the same regarding $71 per barrel currently...$71 X $0.03 is $2.13. Now, is the other $0.60 per gallon all taxes? If so, then back in '08 '09 prices should have been closer to $4.80 to $5.00 per gallon. Also, if this is the case then $0.60 cents of taxes on $2.13 is 28.1% tax. 28% taxes? Think about your payroll taxes from your job, do you pay 28%? No, but you pay the Federal Govt around 12-13% and the State another 2-3%. Then you pay sales tax on everything you buy at around 7.5% for both city and State. Then if you own a home then you pay how much more in taxes? Just thinking out loud on this one! ;:;banghead How are gas prices really set is what I am getting at. Taxes taxes taxes?

Just zoom in you can see most anywhere in the country! As for the f****** dicks in Bismarck we have basically no shipping cost to get the oil to the refinery and the damn refinery is right here in town. Without question Bismarck should have the cheapest gas pretty much in the country. It's funny how that can magically ship the stuff a couple hundred miles east and sell it for $0.30 a gallon cheaper.

Supply and demand not magic Dean! Tesoro is not the only refinery that supplies BisMan. It may be the closest but competition has to truck in fuel or just get it from the sole source. Fargo has a better deal as three fuel pipelines supply the metro. That's quite a bit of competition for that size of metro so that's why gas is cheaper. The Mandan refinery is not the most cost efficient in the country due to its smaller size so you wouldn't expect it to give you the cheapest gas. Gulf coast is where it's at! I bet gas is 2.20 down there. It was 2.49 in WY last week.

Or I suppose, since gas stations are making such a great profit we could all go buy a station and get rich ourselves.
some do. The problem is gas is done by allocation. So the little guy struggles to get fuel. When we moved to Williston in 05 one of the liquor store owners had two pumps out back. He hated the taxes that are charged in fuel. And the price of fuel in general. So he posted the amount of tax on signed in and out of his store. You could buy gas for about forty cents a gallon less there. Not many people knew about it. But half the time he had the pumps off and you couldn’t get fuel. Well one day I had a long visit with him. He said he could rarely get fuel because they didn’t want to sell to him because of what he was doing. He claimed he was still making ten cents a gallon. The only way he could get fuel was out of Canada. But he could rarely get a transport because they were all locked up by the heavy hitters. Only when a load got cancelled or something could he get a load. It’s a hell of a racket.

You know something is fishy when anywhere within an hour of Bismarck has the same price and they all change within hours.

Not necessarily true....Steele is always cheaper, anywhere from a nickel up to a quarter. Totten trail also always cheaper. Washburn is sometimes cheaper and center usually stays a nickel cheaper as well

Yep, pretty sad when i don't even fill in Bismarck anymore on my way up to Sak for the weekend. I know somewhere along the way, Wilton, Washburn, Totten and even Garrison will be cheaper.

The distributors call their stations when gas goes up. When the stations get the call they jack up their prices and don't wait to raise them at their next fill. When gas drops they drag their feet when lowering and usually say we just filled our tanks with the higher priced gas. Never saying we raised it all along when it went up.
