That is the point it's not easy and shooting big mature bucks shouldn't be.

Boy I don't know, I trust the truthfulness of the Big game surveys about as far as I trust the truthfulness of the rep system on here.

what big game surveys? I have heard of these mystical surveys but haven’t seen one in about 25 years. That one was a survey on the deer I saw during rifle season.

Imo both gun and bow season last to long. Fk the deer r hunted practically half a year. It's like the NBA season never quits.

My son got one of those surveys this year asking about his hunting experience during the opening weekend of rifle season. Only problem was he had a youth doe tag (which he filled and also received a survey for ) and wasn't eligible to hunt the regular rifle season. These surveys are clearly gettingthe job done, so no need for harvest reporting or other herd management tools to be used.:::

Yeah I got one too. The only problem is mine came while I was already gone so I had to try to remember how many deer I saw 2 weeks later. Maybe they should stick those in with the tag next time, dumbarses. That's our GNF always up with the times!

Big drawback though. You would be killing some nice bucks before they had a chance to breed. Also, some areas already have a low buck to doe population. I think not only would you affect the population negatively in some areas, but the genetics in most areas. If you think it's more sporting to hunt out of the rut, then hunt after the rut. Then you will take some bucks who have become so energy depleted that in all likelihood they would die in a moderate to bad winter.
this is a very valid point. I'm for making the gun season in Dec. during this downturn in numbers. People can still hunt. Could hunt together during the holidays. But only hardcore hunters will actually go out and walk thus reducing the number of deer killed.

Most deer are shot on Saturdays and Sundays. We should close the season on the weekends.

Since everyone is giving there two cents on a one tag system, what is everyone's thought on the gun season being moved to before the rut?
FFS.

I wanna dig my eye balls out with a spoon. You people dont know when to let it go. Hunting during the rut is almost EVERYONES favorite damn thing in the world. You wanna get rid of boobs too? Good Lord.

Yep, just glass up that mature buck that sleeps in a 80 acre cattail slough.

It can be done. We've sat and glassed large and small areas and you'll eventually see where they are. Deer will stand up or move around more often than a person thinks - at least from what we've seen they do.

maybe "pushing" deer should be eliminated....

how about making rifle season 3 months long, would it reduce the shenanigans? would it reduce stress on the deers?

I have to say - I read Facebook comments and think to myself "how the hell did we ever become a united country at any point with the extreme variation in how people feel about stuff that used to be common sense".

then I read this thread and get the same feeling

Obi:
Maybe I am sitting it up wrong but have a total of 8 sites and four of them are food plots.
Yes the deer are wondering during the rut. Rifle hunters drive around looking for them.
I sit in a permanent stand waiting for them to come to me.

Yes bucks chase does and it stands to reason they will come up to the does at my stand during the rut.
However over the years the deer are not there during the rut like they are before and after.
Last night finally a buck name grandpa came back after being gone for a month. Others have not come back yet. They leave and they do not stand and wait at my food plots waiting for a doe. They go looking for them there does. The doe numbers are also down during the rut at my stand. I have never seen a buck on a doe at my stand. They are to embarrass or like to have private sex and not in front of me.

Hunting for me with a bow during the rut is the poorest time to be able to harvest with the time afterwards when bucks are looking to replenish there food being the best, along with the cold weather and snow on the ground. It is starting now.

I am not sure how I can sit up a food plot to have the deer come to my plot big time during the rut.

I do not understand why we need to change as someone will always be piss no matter what.
As far as closing during the rut for bow hunters, we bow hunters do not have that same advantage as a rifle hunter has during the rut. But fine.
I rifle hunted for 30 plus years and I have no ill will towards them and do not understand why rifle hunters have ill will to bow hunters.
Our arrows do not travel as far as a bullet and for the most part we wait for the deer to come to us. Trust me it is a lot more work if you want to bow hunt successfully.

When I was young with a rifle I shot at a box Friday morning and then walk. After a few days of that I would then drive a vehicle in the morning and late afternoon. Finally we would get a case of beer and drive all day in a vehicle(there were no deer back then) or sit in a vehicle on a hill top. Hunting with a rifle during the rut gave me an advantage. It was fine and I see no reason to take that away from those who do that today. It was good for me back then and I will not deprive the hunter today of that. A lot of good conversation over those beers, with the music turn up and talking stupidly. db

when I was young I just not sit at the watering hole waiting for that one lady to come so I could do what I wanted to do. I needed to go looking and sure did not sit in one spot. Today I am no longer looking for that lady and find I do sit in one spot looking for what I am looking for today.

seems like a reasonable response to a conversation...

I am not the one advocating closing season during the rut but questioned the op
why if he wanted it closed for gun why not also close it for bow. As far as the advantage of bow to rifle hunters during the rut goes I think the increased movement benefits both.
