Cottontail or jack?
On the rabbit drives we were after Jacks.
In our class when we were about in the 6th grade or so us boys on Saturdays (after our chores were done in the winter) would go to farmsteads and hunt a few cottontails and then go to one of our homes and fry them up. Did this many Saturdays in the winter through the years. Had fun and what a blast. Never shot more than we would eat. Always a challenge to see who could get the most.
I was told by an old timer in the Badlands many years ago that is was OK to eat a Jack but to look around its ears for boils. If it had boils don't eat them. He said he did it all the time. Said they were sometimes tough and stringy but edible. I personally like the cottontails as they were tender and tasty!

I would say jack rabbit would fall squarely in the "survival meat only" category. When we were young punks we decided to try it. Even with copious amounts of BBQ sauce and a slow cook on the grill, the meat was not good. Tough, stringy, and gamey. Ick

My dad use to say Jacks were made out of twisted tarp straps.

I don't think you are going to have to worry about many coyotes harassing wildlife. First good snow year in awhile. Lot of guys out on sleds running coyotes down. I know of several groups of guys who enjoy this "winter activity". They had a 25, 27, and 35 dog day. When you add up all the clowns in the area that go out and do this there won't be a large population of coyotes left. I do not condone running coyotes down on sleds, but do see its benefit to the ecosystem.

If you don't condone running down coyotes with sleds then how come you need to report that guys with sleds are killing coyotes with sleds. I disagree with a public broadcast for I wouldn't because illegal is illegal regardless if it's justified. Just my opinion

I think a lot of the internet squabbles would go away if offers of a beer or cup of coffee were acted on.

Good on you GST!

Not really looking to end any internet squabbles, just trying to see what kind of a weirdo that plainsman quotes in his posts on things like right to farm amendment and others..........besides I am planning on piling all my ducks next year, hunting off our land with a gratis tag, dumping a few rocks in some section lines, ignoring a Federal easement on some land we have and keeping a few extra 30 inch walleyes and some muskie for pickling while fishing with some fellas from Wisconsin I know so I may need a good legal professional.

;)
Easy there.............

:;::::

Actually is kinda fun putting a face to the folks on here.

It appears the hay bale in the backyard idea is working perfectly. Dropped it at about 1:30 and had deer eating on it at 3. Should last a few weeks I hope. Took some pics of the gang along with a FANTASTIC 2.5 yo buck. He's very small in the body, but he sure threw a nice set of horns this year. Hope he makes the winter along with the rest of the bunch.

I have a real problem with people running coyotes with sleds. There are many concerns with this as many of these idiots such as cutting fences, running over young tree plantings, trespassing, and stressing other wildlife. It is a death sentence for deer to get breathing hard right now. This act is about as un-sporting as it comes to.

I do not participate in the activity because I do not think it is right.

Why do I need to report that guys with sleds are killing coyotes with sleds? To answer the question "If winter doesn't kill the deer the coyotes will". Just stating the facts that guys are out with sleds killing a good number of coyotes. With that being said the amount of stress on the deer from coyotes will be next to nothing hopefully!!

Odds are your bale won't last very long. Deer will shred a bale in short oder in years like this. When the game and fish were feeding them they would generally put out around five bales at a time at several different spots in the wma I hunted for a total of 15 to 20 bales and in most years with snow the bales would hit the tipping point in around three days. Now there were huge amounts of deer but often these deer would target the bales over the corn and oats that were also there.

Unlike big johnr a deer can go for several days without a snack.

We should start a deer unlimited club and get these farmers who have piles of round hay bales that sit in their yards never to be used.

If you are going to go into a farmers yard asking for something...........you might want to drop the "unlimited" portion of your clubs name.........The initials DU might not sit so well.:)
