I heard a similar story when I was a kid of a couple guys shooting a cow moose in the grasslands probably mid-late 90's. They were so excited and proud of themselves when they showed up to the deer processor in a nearby little town.

I remember 2 young hunter opening day of the N.D. Deer rifle season. They shot a Cow Moose, just because they could and drove away. The Game Warden is investigating the kill and they put out a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the party's involved. One of the Boys Father turns in the boys and collects the reward. Now the boys are like 15 or 16 yrs old. The Father get more money then what the fine is. As the boys are minors and not much of a fine. But damn good parenting, right D.P.

Not where I'd like to be
I've probably told this on here before, but back in my youth, a dude from the town just across the border (in MN of course) was out deer hunting and shot a horse, thinking it was a deer. He was like 80-something, couldn't see for shit, and had no business hunting.
The kicker: a girl was riding the horse when he shot it.
Allen is right. You can't make this shit up.

Yep, he shot the horse from his porch. As I recall, he lost his hunting privileges until he was in his 90s.

The horse, was straight up white in color and was the only casualty, luckily.

being charged seems a bit extreme... I totally support confiscating the animal and a significant fine, but not sure this should be criminal, if it was supposedly an accident.

Moose

Yeah I see the resemblance pretty hard to tell, I mean it's just an honest mistake right.
Part of having the right to hunt is proper identification of your quarry. What if this guy, or any other person, was shooting at an actual deer missed and there happened to be another hunter they didn't see and that hunter gets hit? He openly admits to not being able to see or identify his target correctly, Quote: The 38-year-old man told authorities he was up in his deer stand north of Cotton. He saw antlers and thought it was a deer, so he shot twice.
He told officers glare from the sun and tree cover made it hard to see the animal. He texted another member of his hunting party saying, he messed up and shot a moose.

If a person cannot correctly identify something this different then they need to get punished accordingly by the states laws, if you are ok with not 100% identifying a target and just letting a bullet fly then I darn sure don't want to be anywhere near you with a gun. I'm sure he isn't going to get hung too bad, especially if he turned himself in learning his mistake later but he needs to get punished. Hopefully others will see this story and think a little, who knows but it could save a human life
