I heard a similar story when I was a kid of a couple guys shooting a cow moose in the grasslands probably mid-late 90's. They were so excited and proud of themselves when they showed up to the deer processor in a nearby little town.

I remember 2 young hunter opening day of the N.D. Deer rifle season. They shot a Cow Moose, just because they could and drove away. The Game Warden is investigating the kill and they put out a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the party's involved. One of the Boys Father turns in the boys and collects the reward. Now the boys are like 15 or 16 yrs old. The Father get more money then what the fine is. As the boys are minors and not much of a fine. But damn good parenting, right D.P.

I've probably told this on here before, but back in my youth, a dude from the town just across the border (in MN of course) was out deer hunting and shot a horse, thinking it was a deer. He was like 80-something, couldn't see for shit, and had no business hunting.
The kicker: a girl was riding the horse when he shot it.
