This fall feels like the drought falls of the early-mid 2000's. I remember several days in October with record temps and really warm November too. We had some good years on the Missouri River during those times here in SD so I hope something changes. The last few years have been abysmal. But, the migration is going to be late just like its been leaning for years. There will be birds in Canada way longer than the majority will ever believe. The calendar birds will show up as usual but the big honkers and fat greenheads will tough it out as always.

Crickets in SD right now, not much going on for migration.

Looks like the big push won't happen for another 2 weeks. It looks like Canada is forecasted for 24-7 cold temps starting in two weekends. Let's hope some birds stop over for awhile!

Things are definitely later. First deer opener I haven't heard the Goldeye whistling overhead. Usually they're thick as fleas...then again, we also sometimes have snow on the ground and ice on the sloughs.

Problem is when it's this slow to cool down the migration gets spread out a bunch and the "big push" doesn't exactly happen. Yeah, there'll be a push once it does get cold but not quite like it would if Canada were to freeze up on Nov. 1. What can ya do...

Been outside a lot today and I have not heard many birds migrating at all. What gives?

We found ducks today. Shot 7 very fine green heads with the two of us. Should of had 10 but we were whiffing like an American League pitcher in the World Series.

Buddy went up to Saskatchewan this weekend to hit the birds since the guys he knew had been hammering them but by the time he got there the birds had thinned out so much that they had to drop south into nd to find enough birds to hunt.

The small ponds just iced up in my neck of the Turtle Mountains yesterday and today the locals were gone , There was a good crop of Canadians and ducks.

Hunted over water. Corn fed fatties. Lots of fat to render down tomorrow and carcasses for duck stock. May go again Tuesday.

Ive heard the rendered duck fat is delishus! whats your method and what do you use it for? Id actually like to try it.

The mallards we have been shooting seem to have been here for awhile, very fat! Hank Shaw has a how to on his blog for rendering fat, it is good stuff. Killer fried potatos

Yep. Goggle Hank Shaw SfP. I got my recipe from Outdoor News a few years ago but Hank wrote the column. I rendered down about 2-3 cups yesterday from parts of 7 birds. Plenty for making confit now.
