Lake is all but crapped out, never thought this day would ever come but sadly as of august 3rd all walleye fishing will cease, when the tribes won their appeal to hunt/fish and gather under the 1837treaty for sustainence we knew we were in for a battle, nothing in that treaty spelled out "gill neting" as a method, since the same thing happened to upper red lake, only it took 8 tribes (6 from wisc) to deplete the walleye spawning bio mass to a point of collasps on mille lacs.

This doesn't effect you guyz in north Dakota but is a headsup of what might come your way, this issue is national and also happening in Canada and the great lakes where the lake trout population is on the decline because of netting and overharvest and also throughout the west including washinton state and the Columbia river.

Pretty sure most if not all resorts will go tits up because of this just like red lake, but the tribal casino money will still roll in.

When you say "cease", no one can keep walleyes? Target them? Is the smallmouth fishery still awesome?

I got an idea, start a hatchery for stocking fingerlings. That's is what north dakota does but north dakota game and fish has to stock only 200+ lakes statewide. That's a solution to a potential problem for tribal lakes.

Maybe since it is no longer 1837, and we are already "sustaining" the tribes, this could be removed?

Why is it impossible to make any changes when it comes to native Americans, is it discrimination to me that I get taxed to feed, house, cloth, provide medical care, and pay for college for them now, and also have to allow entire lakes to be netted out?

Not being racist, just asking a question.

No walleye fishing period,no live bait rigs either and "yes" mille lacs is still a world class smallie lake, sadly that's part of the issue, for several years mille lacs was regulated for trophy smallies, only one over 21"s for the wall was allowed, today the lake is loaded with monster smallies and we now have a 6 smallie daily limit any size, but who would eat these fish? well maybe the non natives from the east I guess.

As far as stocking goes, not a chance to stock mille lacs just so the special few can continue to net, this treaty right covers 12 counties from the wisc border to the Dakotas, further the tribals are lobbing to hunt/fish off reservation today, they don't/refuse to regonize state borders and regulations as well, they also have a 9months big game hunting season including night shinning throughout the ceded territory.

Johnr, thats the irony of it,its because its law we honor the treaty, even tho we read the clause "unless said rights become a conservation issue" no one wants to battle the tribe in court,we even sued the state over this fight for equal rights and the miss mgt of lake mille lacs and lost, trbes take federal money n grants and loans plus are wallowing in casino monies, don't pay taxes etc.The whole deal sucks.

I grew up on this lake, the lake was fine for 40years and like all walleye lakes we had peaks and valley's until the netting started in 1999,our Ojibwa tribe always taught the old ways to their younger generation and we get that, now its a "in your face deal" because we can and you can't and whocares about the lake we live in Wisconsin.

I'm guessing with ML shutdown and upper red having really low limits it will effect us. I have a feeling we will be seeing even more blue plates at Devils.

I've been seeing a lot already and not just Devils. Lots of blue ones and even lots of....gasp....Red lettered lake raper plates.

Winni is having problems as well. They have had a protected slot for a while and now the way it sounds you can catch larger fish but nothing you can legally take home for the fry pan. One theory is that an overabundance of large Walleyes leads them to cannibalism of young Walleyes. Fish hatch but don't get a chance to grow up. The netters as well as anglers target the smaller fish.

You bet this will effect both the Dakotas,I doubt folks will just stop walleye fishing, once you've been bitten by the walleye bug you can't help yourself,oh and say one word about living like the old days and they pull the race card pronto or call you a "hater".

This is what happens during spawn on our lakes, for several years the netters took 70tons of walleyes that we know of each spring, who knows how many more is the question, and as you can see female walleyes full of eggs and not just small males are taken. Most pike and muskies are thrown back as undesireable and won't count against their tribal quota, the water is cold and the fish are dead when they pull the nets,so these fish sink until the water warms, then they float to shore by the 100's,we have video's of this as well, yet our dnr turns a blind eye,its said this is the tribal plan,to kill the lake off, then the tribe slides in and buys up all the lakeshore property for .01's on the dollar in order to own the entire lake.

They must sell it, no way they are eating all that fish.
I have purchased reservation cheese before, it is the best. Not sure it's legal for them to resell sell

Johnr, thats another sore spot, unless the tribe has a commercial license it is illegal to sell the fish which they don't have...wink,wink,however the usfw service conducted a sting a couple years ago, busted a handful of natives and non natives for selling and buying fish, you can google "operation squarehook" to get the entire story, bottom line is the natives got off with nary a slap on the wrist from trible court (oh really?what a shock) and the white guys got stapled to the wall for buying the fish. Two year operation that cost the tax payers $1000's if not 100's of $1000's just for the state of Minnesota.

I thought the purpose of letting them net is to pass down traditions of old. I guess I didn't realize they had monofilament gill nets hundreds of years ago or 90 horse Evenrudes. The DNR might as well lift all size restrictions and possesion limits with this crap going on. I'm beyond tired of this minority rules crap.

Well what happens is white shame. For some reason every cultures rich history is that of pride and reverence, unless you are of the European countries and white, then you should be ashamed of your history and what your ancestors stood for.
You see this land was stolen, not won on the battlefields. We need different laws depending on your skin color and ancestry
