Im probably going to buy a new push lawn mower in the future. My current one is a hand me down and the engine just isn't quite right, im no mechanic and small engine repair shops seem hard to come by.
What brands do you push lawn mower people recommend? self propelled? bagger? I really don't want to spend any more that maybe $300 on one...because, well, its just a push mower...

i buy nothing without a honda motor anymore... might not fit your budget, but just spend $500 now if possible instead of $300 per on a cheaper new one every 5 years or so...

good luck...

I bought a John Deere JX75 in 1998 for 800.00 (yes it was alot 18 years ago) it still starts on the first pull, Kawasaki 6hp, if my boys couldn't wreck it, it has to be a good mower! I found another one like it about 10 years newer used on Bisman and bought that one also, nothing bad to say about either, change oil once a year and run the piss out of it but use premium gas.

I'm on year 8 and no issues. Change oil and air filter in the spring, sharpen when needed.

Twenty one years for my Toro but it started to smoke a little last year so going to buy another this year. The personal pace is the only way to go

Personal pace is awesome!

Our old one is about 20 years old too. We took it to the lake in 2007, it got flooded out in 2009 and still runs, but like yours is starting to burn a little oil.

Self propelled Honda, or at least make sure its self propelled. I never bought into the whole self propelled mower, then one time I picked one up for free. Game changer, throw a beer holder on there and you're set.

I have a self propelled 1st start craftsman. It was about 300 bucks and has 4 years of use it still runs good. It will take 5 or 6 pulls to start it the 1st time this speing. After that, it's 1 pull and no choke.

Yea I have a craftsman as well, 15 years and still works fine. Push the primer a couple times and it starts on the first pull. Sears has one like it on sale for $279. Briggs motor. It's had to have mowed thousands of acres over the years with the kids growing up taking lawn mower jobs around town as well I'd think. Just keep up on the air cleaner and oil changes and you won't have any worries.
We bought a $1200 craftsman riding mower at the same time, same goes for it. Haven't even replaced the belt yet. It has a Koehler with a spin off oil filter. Talk about a trouble free mower. Believe it's called an LT 2000 model or something like that. Great machine, our yard consists of three lots so it's had its hands full all of its life and zero problems.

Bought a husqvarna (sp?) last spring. Has the Honda engine with pace control. Figured it'd be easy for the wife to use if she ever decided to give lawn maintenance a shot. I think I got it for $400 on sale with an extra 10% off since lowes is awesome and offers a veteran discount.

I am on my 7th or 8th mower. I have been responsible for my own yards for close to 25 years now, and I am a slow learner(cheap too)

3 years ago I finally made the decision to buy a higher end model. I was tired of effn around trying to get shit to start, or run, or cut straight, or last a couple seasons.

the first mower was a Kmart special, $100 and a case of oil thrown in. Lasted the longest out of my cheap mowers. I had a $350 craftsman that the self propel went out on, that spend 11 weeks in the sears repair shop(most of the mowing season).

I have a Toro brand now, not sure on the exact model, but it starts first pull, cuts excellent, can mulch, bag, or blow. I think I paid in the $650 range or so, but figure I will use this mower for 15-20 years, so in the long run it cost me $35 a year to own, other then the $10 in gas it uses a year.

I bought a Cub Cadet in that price and range a year ago and it seems solid so far.

I agree with the Honda motor.... vs. the Briggs & Stratton. I'd buy the Honda motor 10x as often. I've had a mower I purchased at Sam's Club in 2006 with a Honda motor. It's been zapping blades of grass for 10yrs and all I've done is change oil and sharpen the blade. I believe I got it at the end of the season, on sale, for $249 closeout price that was previously $379.

It smokes a little now as I first start the engine, but that's it; no other oil added the entire summer. It's a one-pull machine and ready to roll as soon as you pull it out of the garage.

If you don't buy your lawn mower right now, wait until October to do it. You'll get the better prices early or late in the year!
