Would this person in question be hailed a hero if he had taken a picture of a scale showing 16.6lbs and video of the release stating that it was snagged so he was releasing it? Damned if you do, Damned if you don't......

Nope, because the law says it must be released immediately. Jealous sonsabitches would piss and moan you had the fish out of the water too long taking pics and weighing when the law says, "Released immediately".

Some folks just CAN'T be happy unless they're the center of attention and they'll do anything they can to tear down folks stealing their spotlight.

If the head of ND G&F enforcement were my net-man and the head of fisheries were taking professional quality video of the fish 100% caught in the lips, I seriously doubt I'd have taken the fish in for an official weight or a potential record. I don't want that kind of attention. I enjoy recreating in peace.

anyone every question how in the hell would you drag a 17 lb fish sideways through current? couldn't be an easy task on a 1/4 oz jig and anything other than an 8'rod

No way. I done seen those NCSISCI guys on the TV use one o' them lie detectors. If it's good enough for CBS primetime, it's good enough for a fish.

Gibbs dont use no polygraph he just used his gut and slams the guys head on the table a few times.

how does a guy land a 80 lb paddlefish off the wingwalls caught on 10lb test and a quarter once jig? It happens, it's obvious most of the people commenting on how do you snag this or how would you land this if it was snagged, haven't done it and are almost completely oblivious as to how the majority of fish were being caught down there. That's fine you don't get it, that doesn't mean that it's jealousy or anything else other than skepticism of the story, due to either previous experiences fishing there or elsewhere. I listened to the guys podcast interview with mcfeely and he said in there that "it was hooked in the mouth but the line was wrapped around his tail" according to his buddy net man joe. who told him it was legit it was in the mouth, so obviously the thought ran through volks head admittedly when he seen it roll and start coming in sideways that it may have been snagged.

The only person who may truly know where it was hooked is the guy who netted it, but then why stop to take the jig out of it's back before you brought it up for pictures. Why not leave it in the fish's mouth? There are just way to many questionable things and I am guessing that's why the GNF is admittedly looking into it further, and why there is a lot of skepticism on it being a legit SR.
He also said in the podcast they caught a few carp and suckers that day too, I wonder if he hooked all of them in the mouth too.

Either way I would say a majority of the skeptics have a legitimate concern that the fish was snagged after hearing first hand accounts of it being snagged by people that were there and/or then seeing the video and stills of joe taking the hook out of the fish's back. As much of a shit show as it got to be down there everyone was really courteous to each other and would tell guys nice fish, help net them take hooks out, or take pictures for the guys who caught/snagged the fish. I seen a quite a few snagged fish get kept but the majority of the big fish or snagged fish were released when I was down there, granted there were only 8-10 guys in the main hole during that time. I really can't believe how much negative rep and arguing there is about this, but drama is half the fun of websites like this so enjoy the show. :;:cheers;:;popcorn

Same way you drag a 100 lb paddlefish across the flooding Yellowstone or Missouri with 30lb line.

I did snag a paddle fish last year with 8lb test, medium action rod and a 1/4 oz jig. Took me 50 minutes, but I did land it. Even snagged closer to the tail as you can see in the pic. My fish was considerably larger than the 16.9lbs in question. It is possible. Lots of guys snag these beasts with walleye tackle.

I fished down there the days prior and did not land 1 walleye or see 1 walleye snagged. The fish that were snagged were carp and suckers

on a 9' heavy rod, and paddlefish are pussy's. 30 lb line is a far cry from 8 lb. cant believe how butt hurt people get when other people succeed.

ever caught a 16 lb paddlefish on paddlefishing gear. about like catching a creek chub.... LB for LB not even close to the same fish. I have been with when a 108lb paddlefish was caught and numerous over 70. They take a long time to bring in. as I would assume a 16 lb snagged walleye would come in. can it be done, yes, but in the time that this did....not a chance in hell

Not that difficult to bring in a snagged fish with current. Just did a 18# carp with Shimano Symetre 2500 reel, 8# trilene, and 6'6" St. Croix rod the other day.
Not implying by anymeans... LET THE TOPIC GO !
It's not hurting anyone unless you were the previous, and I bet they don't give two shits anyhow.

I have reeled in lots of paddlefish with 6 ft jigging pole with 6 lb test and a 1/4 oz jig. I have caught several with 10 lb fireline and crank baits too. I have caught 30 lb buffal carp with 6 lb test too

The video kind a reminds of a pheasant shot in hettinger county off the road and a farm truck is coming down the road at 80mph -- how the bird would be picked up and "pace would fast"

Lord, I sure hope I never catch/ shoot a state record;:;banghead

ha ha - let's look back at least year's walleye - did he get the third degree? no

because witnesses and conditions didn't warrant scrutiny - this case is different - why make it sound like this scrutiny is common?
