Portable Ice Houses: Flip Over vs. Pop-up

I'm a hub guy, cause I use a Ranger to get to my spots. If it's walk in only its probably warm enough to just sit on the ice.
I would like to get a flippy, but never really seen where my set up doesn't work in western ND. When we head to the big windy, a flip house is really the only way to go. But that's once a season, and my posy is already set up in the flippy market.

I hear this all of the time. But I love my Clam Yukon TC. Its light enough where I can load it on my own, fish two people if need be, yet small enough to justify flipping it over for one guy. I have not had one issue with it. Clam nation!!!!

I went from a pop up to a flip over last winter. Mulitple reasons, but kicked myself for selling my pop-up, but wouldn't give up the flip over. I don't know how many times I had to go chasing after my pop up when setting up or taring down. I ended up getting angel wings for the pop up which saved a ton of time. But in the end portability sucked. ended up sitting behind the pickup most of the time instead. Picked up and otter 650 and have been quite happy. Plenty of room for 1 , alright for 2, miserable for 3.

Some of their stuff isn't bad, it's their 20$ mini shovels and led lights that are cheap Chinese products. The lures they come out with every year make a guy wonder what they're thinking.

I have had them all I too own a Yukon that fits in a short box. Works good for me. Yes u have to buy $25 spare parts and I believe the newer ones have the issues taken care of. I have had tin (before the ice castle days) couldnt drag onto the lake in 97 got rid of. A canvas with a sheet of plywood back in the 80s hot hot and saggy. Three piece plywood with two doors blue tarp noise u needed ear plugs. Suitcase 8x6 that thing was heavy but nice. I had a small pop up that blew away when I set it up. It went in garbage. IMO the insulated otter is probably the best (buddy has). But u need two people two load I don't with the tc. I have a topper when I go to DL and stay over everything fits in truck and is locked. Eos

All be damned it is. I wonder if those window panels are insulated. I'd like to look at that one in person. If those windows don't seal up good that thing could be a drafty bastard.

Flip over when I'm by myself it's faster to setup and more mobil. I use the pop up when ever I have the kids with. Has way more room that way they can move around. They are not that bad in the wind once u figure out where to put your anchors.

Same here. Pop up (Clam Big Foot 4000) is nice when the whole family is with and I know I wont be moving much if at all. I use my flip overs (clam kenai pro thermal and otter pro xt1200 lodge) for everything else. What ever you get, make sure it is thermal. I wouldnt even consider buying an ice house that wasnt thermal anymore. I think otter makes a better quality product.

i have the same house and its a useful pile of shit. It does all the things you mentioned which is really all i need, but its just so chincy/fragile. The poles suck, and whoever decided that plastic clips on an ICE house were a good idea should be fired.

I changed out my tent for a full thermal voyager, the push pin system isn't made to last because of the aluminum holes loose their shape and the pins won't hold anymore. I drilled holes all the way through and use a Shaft Locking Retainer Pin Clips which is much easier to remove when the push pins get filled up with ice. I have the same clam going on my 5 winter, which I bought used from perch patrol. Nothing wrong with clam just needs a little upgraded fasteners.

I've had both, always thermal, this be my second year with the otter lodge flip over, love everything about except the weight but the sleds are twice the sled of the clams so I went with the longevity, you will need two guys though it's 127#'s empty, love the square poles instead of the round on many others

I have my used thermal top voyager "tent canvas " for sale if someone wants it, no holes, all zippers good bought a full thermal so the old man is warmer is all. PM me if you are interested any reasonable offer is fine with me. It just sitting in my basement

For you guys loading Otters by yourself. Go get a pair of ramp ends at Menards and cut your boards to fit in the bed of your truck. I pull my Otter thermal up them no problem.

I am extremely disappointed in myself for not thinking of and doing this yet. Will be done this year. Love my Thermal Otter!
