I drew this year in 1A with 6 points.
Gotcha. The point I was getting at is you seem to be open to letting hunters on when you have problems with animals. I’d definitely let hunters on my land if I wanted animals outta there. It ain’t hard.Zone E5 wasn't created until years later.
Interesting, did not know GNF did that.GNF depredation payments have nothing to do with the USDA.
Knew what? It would be abused like it has been? I'd be ok with a gratis tag for a minimum of 640 acres but the 160 has become a joke. Who's making a living on 160 acre farm now days? There used to be a small elk herd south of Pick City. The landowners tolerated the bulls getting tangled into the swing set, eating with the cattle at the feed bunks and knocking over corn. To a point.
There was no money coming from GnF for damages so they decided to take a spike bull in compensation. They spread the meat amongst several and even wrote elk meat on the packages in their deep freezes. Busted.
Their tolerance went to zero and GnF had to capture and relocate the elk.
The people who came up with the gratis tag idea waaaay back when..........knew.

So you are saying that if you don’t own land you can’t hunt? There are thousands and thousands of public acres to hunt. I gaurantee that if the shoe was on the other foot you would have your land locked up tighter than your daughter’s innocence. Jealousy is a fickle bitch.Yeah lets only allow landowners to hunt anymore. That'll help the hunting heritage a ton!![]()
I own 12 acres. But I grew up on a ranch in the badlands and dealt with deprelation and wrecked fences all of the time. The ranch got one gratis tag that we filled to eat. We let people hunt that were friends or people we trusted that were smart enough to close gates respected the land by not littering. Plus I could give two fucks less who buys land. if you got the money, buy it. I don’t give a shit what you do with it. It’s your land !!!Don't worry he probably owns land then gripes how drs and lawyers buy land for hunting and frive up land prices
The hate gratis cry babies are too stupid to realize this.Yes, take away all gratis tags. Make it a "one tag only" system for deer.
THEN, when you do go knock on that landowners door to ask permission to hunt their land, please record that conversation and let us all hear it. I look forward to the landowners response. Also, be sure to tell them how in favor of getting rid of the gratis tags you were. It should really help everyone's cause on getting onto private land.
This is the most logical and intelligent comment on this subject. I’d vote yes on this all day everyday.Make the requirements for a gratis tag be for
640 acres minimum
The applicant has to be personally actively farming or ranching the land in question.
66% of their combined annual gross income has to come from farming activities.
This would eliminate all those that bought land for hunting being able to pull a gratis tag on it.
Not jealous and 99% of my hunting is on public land.sounds to me Obi-Wan might be a little jealous If that happens hunting per say will be done because no private land will be open to anyone.. Careful what you wish for
Skeeter is a boomer. Skeet skeet. Buy your own he said!!The hate gratis cry babies are too stupid to realize this.
That’s how it is down here and they keep tabs on it pretty damn good. I know they actually check and make sure the land claimed follows all the rules guy got pinched trying to be sneaky last year.Good question? The real question is where do they really hunt? I think it's supposed to be just their land.
The Homestead Act was for 160 acres. Provided the new owner did improvements and lived there.Knew what? It would be abused like it has been? I'd be ok with a gratis tag for a minimum of 640 acres but the 160 has become a joke. Who's making a living on 160 acre farm now days?
