One can't even buy yeast at this point. And it got me wondering, any of you fella NDAers ever make your own sourdough bread? It can be some of my fave, along with rye, you can keep that nutty 7-grain crap.

I was reading the description on how to get a culture of "starter" goin at SourDoughStarter. Sure sounds like a lot of work to me.

I ran a SD starter for a while for homemade pizzas, about a year. It was a pain, and really couldn't taste much difference in a 48hr+ fermented dough with instant yeast, so I went back to IDY. However, now that everyone turned into a baker all of a sudden, I might have to activate the other packet of SD culture I have, since yeast is not available.

The Amish have been doing this for many years and it has proven to be worthy method for them.

It might have a lot to do with DNA but I am a poor candidate for eating bread, I had to give it up and beer too. It makes my blood sugar spike but both are among the most missed foods in my diet .

Cindy, has in the past and wants to get one started. I was making daily trips for awhile. I was promised yeast and rye flour come Wensday. We'll see.

When this all hit the fan, I saw a recipe on fb for making a loaf of bread in a crockpot. Found 2 packages of yeast that expired in 2005, whipped it up and turned out great. haven't been able to get yeast since

We got lucky and found someone who was selling bulk yeast. I'm not at the point of wanting to make it myself yet.

I've been quite the chef as of late too. I've made whole wheat bread and piles of tortillas. You just can't beat homemade tortillas. Especially if they are done right. We are currently pickling some pike. It should be ready to try tomorrow. See how that turns out.
