I'd be all for private ownership of these casino's too. Either way doesn't matter to me.

Anyone can gamble away their money across the state by participating in the lottery. Compulsive gamblers, like alcoholics, find ways to feed their addiction. Black Jack and pull tabs can also be found just about anywhere but according to current law can only be played while alcohol is served.

Siting a casino to provide easy access to a good part of the population would be fairly easy. Put on in Coleharbor and attract the Bismarck/Mandan, Minot, and Lake Sakakawea crowds. A location between Fargo and Grand Forks would also be a great spot to plunk one in. Much better roadway access than Prairie Knights, Newtown, Belcourt, etc. One could be placed just west of Medora and wouldn't detract much from the rustic beauty of the town and current motel and restaurant facilities should be able to handle the additional traffic that extends beyond the musical season.

Would imagine the facilities would need to be smoke-free to meet current state law and would not end up being an ashtray like Prairie Knights.

North Dakota would be smart to start slow with one or two and see how the revenues support the venture.

Was reminded that churches conduct raffles for their carnivals giving away cars and trucks. Seems like gambling is not a sin if you do it for raising revenue for your religious purposes.

Gambling gets a bad rap as an addiction. We don't ban alcohol because there are alcoholics. We don't ban cigarettes, cigars, etc. because of addicted smokers. We don't ban all you can eat buffets because some people have eating disorders. I say give the proposal a chance!

I guess I wouldn't mind private ownership, they pay taxes to the state like anyone else. State ownership just doesn't work, the idea of going to a customer service industry establishment staffed by government employees is pretty laughable. We think employees on the res act like they don't give a shit, try ones that have to go on administrative leave and have 10 people go through reports before they can be fired. At the end of they day the effect on small towns and small programs who live on charitable gaming would be a beating that imo would outweigh the risk. As a (sort of) comparison Montana has gaming in every little town on the map(as well as Native casinos) and they all pay the state a percentage. Montana's taxes are still higher than ND's, no sales tax yes but apparently gaming does't begin to cut it. Be careful with a government that loves to spend money and says it needs more, ND is relatively recent in that regard but boy it sure looks like that has become and been accepted as the norm.

A Reagan quote comes to mind: “Government is like a baby: an alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.”

There is little difference in the way politicians work whether it's federal, state, or county. Those who say state is more responsible simply have a legislator in their pocket at a bargain price. Senators cost more. That's the only difference in the corrupt.

For many reasons, ive got no interest at all in letting someone make millions or billions of off gambling in this state.

I'm all ears on this subject and want to hear the good the bad and the ugly of it. Do you think private owned casinos would end up costing the state more than they make in the long run ?

I think in the stipulations it has to be 20 miles from a populated area, WTF does this do cause people to travel longer distances. :;:huh It might not be so bad to try one somewhere, but I can already hear "lets build all 6 at one time so we can get a deal on materials and a contractor. BS.

Putting them out in the middle of nowhere would be a horrible idea and would definitely result in an overall reduction in profitability of them. There's a reason customer related businesses are not found 50 miles from town. You do that and now it becomes something you do on your days off and not a place a person stops by for an hour or two after work to blow off some steam. Not to mention inclement weather wreaking havoc during the winter. The big advantage these places would have is the ability to be near the population centers so not using that advantage would be very counterproductive.

Do the existing casinos contribute to the state as far as addiction treatment? Just wondering if we would be better off with our own private run casinos. Not sure about state owned though.

I looked and couldn't find the paper trail for Indian owned casinos. The ND state lottery contributed 320,000 to the state gambling addiction fund, $ 422,500 to the state drug task force and $ 6.1 M to the state general fund in 2016.

Ok let the state run buisnesses, but then put the stipulation that it has to be self sufficient. No more income or property taxes.

People that whine about state and county govt not being accountable usually never take the time to show up and participate in the representative governing system we have.

Kinda hard to whine about legislators not being responsible and accountable when the people whose job it is to hold them accountable and responsible are not accountable and responsible to do it.

Say plainsman, when is the last time you went and testified on an issue you felt strongly about?

Now that you are retired shouldn;t you have lots of time?

I see where guy is coming from , It was my first thought too but the idea is intriguing and deserves a good look at. At what point do we quit bubble wrapping the world for a few .

And so it begins.

Medicinal pot, legalize coke..............Maybe even meth and heroin.

Every great civilization started unraveling with that little ideology.

Yes but we are talking blackjack, pull tabs and bingo in bars not bingo halls who's traffic is light to begin with. People are not going to up and ditch their favorite bar just because there is a casino 10 miles away. For many these games are not the driving force to get them in the bar but just a side benefit.

In small towns all across the state if you cut revenues from charitable gambling in half, most of the entities dependent on them will fold. Even by one third and they would be done. They simply will not cover the costs of the people to run the tables check the machines and have enough left to matter.

why was the state of ND cleaning up a mess on ACOE land that they allowed to happen?

Because like most govt jobs they will get more revenues paid back from the Federal govt than it actually cost.

The proposed amendment to the constitution would require a buffer of 5 miles from any populated city of more than 5,000 and 20 miles from the boundary of an Indian Reservation. It's 5 miles across town in Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, etc. so this distance would not be and issue.

And do tell how this would cut those small towns bingo sales in half. You act like this is a death blow when in fact last I checked we already have several casinos spread out across the state and it's they who will see a large revenue shift not the local bar down the street!

Every great civilization failed when it's people became too dumb to spot crackpots like you and we're too dumb to know they should laugh at you instead of listen to you. Oh and coke is legal in this country if your Coca Cola since they still import 100 tons of Coca leaves a year! Oh and by your insanely flawed Logic the entire country should have failed a hundred years ago when all of that shit was legal!

!

Most small towns have pull tabs and possibly a black jack table if they can still generate enough to pay dealers. They lose a portion of the gamblers to the casinos we already have. Those casinos are going to be X miles from these small towns. If the state comes in and builds 6 across the state, unless they build them on top of the Indian casinos it will cut the distance those that gamble have to drive to do so. THAT is what will increase the loss of gambling revenues by a percentage in these small towns.

But then only having sat on two boards of entities that generated revenues from small town gambling I likely don;t know nearly as much about this as you do Mr. Nelson

Holy Mr Nelson, ya gotta let go of the hate this personal stuff is rather childish. Okay, okay.....it is hard to tell a wolf from a dog and corporations can;t own land in ND and you are by far the smartest fella on here. ;)

So you are saying "coke"/cocaine is legal in this country........because I am pretty sure everyone here knew that is what I was talking about in a drug based reference.

But you see this nation did not let it remain legal did it..........why do you suppose that was oh great Karnak the Magnificent?

Name the completely Libertarian based nations that have no laws regulating personal choices that have stood the test of time for several centuries.

Really Dean, let go of the hate.

Had a pretty good argument with one that was stupid enough to get her head stuck in a gate today.

You made a statement about bubble wrapping laws.

It is simply my opinion that seems to fit with history that when societies begin opening up their tolerances and accepting things that they know have negative consequences, the costs begin to outweigh the value.

I know a few on here hate the word incrementalism, but it is a reality of virtually every civilizations down fall.

That goes to the core reason the people of this state have opposed casinos thus far, gay marriage, recreational pot.........20 years ago if you told someone in 20 years gay marriage will be legal in ND we will be smoking pot legally and the state will be arguing to build casinos around the state you would have gotten a response similar to Deans little rant.

Yet in 20 years here we are.

So where will we be in another 20 years if we keep up this pace of "tolerance"?
