Need a recommendation for modest priced Steak Knives?
The best thing I did is purchased non-serrated steak knives and a worksharp belt sharpener. I'm not even sure what knives I have but I got them from one of the kitchen stores because I liked how they felt. Sharpen them up every month or so and I've had no issues with my knives. Is it fun, nope, but I haven't had many issues either with my knives the past 3 years or so. Also a good excuse to sharpen up the big game knives and fillet knife so they're aways ready.

For those that can just sharpen them by hand, you have talents that I don't!

Did someone ever make a decent non-serrated steak knife??

I've purchased nice heavy built ones on occasion - and I find myself reaching for the cheap and lightweight 30 yr old Farber with the thin/cheap (stamped?) blades.

Makes non sense - but they simply function/feel better.

ive got some wusthoff ones that are pretty decent, had them for 20 years now. If you cut on hard plates of course it will dull the blade quickly, but if you use plastic/wooden plates they hold up pretty good. Anything with a straight edge pretty much cannot hold up cutting on glass, except maybe ceramic blade knives...

My steaks cut with a butter knife, you guys don't need better knives, you need better cooking skills.

I never really thought about it until now, but there's a squeegee-like "squeak" I feel/hear when I cut steak with a non-serrated knife - and it bugs me somehow.

I am that way with someone chewing on an ice cube. I about have to leave the house

I like a serrated steak knife. I bought the ginsu 6 piece set off of amazon. They're pretty good but I've used better ones. My Mom has some old serrated steak knives that I really like but can't tell what brand they are and probably not made anymore.

I inherited a set of these almost 20 years ago, and they were used before I got them. I would really like to find more of the same or similar, but there is no branding/identification on them. Frustrating someone would make such an awesome knife and not put a brand on it.

They have a unique fine seration pattern and have never been sharpened. They have exclusively been run through dishwashers and used almost daily for food prep and as silverware, whereas the nice Wusthof knives are hand washed only and dull faster when used as silverware on hard plates.

The serrations are fine enough they make a nice looking cut through meat where others give more of a torn appearance. Also great for food prep as they slice tomatoes much nicer than the fancy Wusthof knives.

my mom has a single old wood handle knife with that serration style, it does work well...

I have some older non-serrated Oneida knives. They do the job just fine. Not stainless, seem to hold their edge fine. I'd recommend if you're looking for a budget option. If I wanted to spend some money, I'd look at Cutco, Zwilling, or Victorinox. I've got a couple other Cutco's that I like, specifically their hunting knife fillet knife.

Hate serrated steak knives so this is what we use for a steak knife.
Run them over a steel once in a while or use the Work Sharp on them.

The bane of non-serrated steak knives is the plate/platter. Given that you have 2 options:

1. A reasonably soft steel you can influence back to a good edge quickly.

2. A steel that's harder than woodpecker lips and a bitch to sharpen when it needs it.
