Copied and pasted from Brad Dokken, guess we will find out soon.

Devils Lake
Reports are hard to come by these days, and anglers planning to venture out should use caution as ice conditions deteriorate, especially near pressure ridges and current areas.
The big news, of late, is the tiger muskie that reportedly measured 48½ inches caught Monday near Grahams Island by an angler fishing out of Lakeview Lodge.
According to Randy Hiltner, northeast district fisheries supervisor for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department in Devils Lake, Game and Fish last stocked tiger muskies in Devils Lake in 2002, when 80,000 smaller fingerlings were stocked. Before that, Hiltner said, Game and Fish stocked tiger muskies in 1991 and throughout most of the late 1980s.

"I wouldn't expect to see many more catches of tigers, as they are getting old," Hiltner said. In an email.
Jim Job, district game warden in Devils Lake, said people fishing next to the angler who caught the fish called him about the muskie to ask about the minimum length measured it at 48½ inches on the ice.
North Dakota law requires immediate release of muskies less than 48 inches long.
Job, who took possession of the fish Tuesday, said Thursday said he was waiting for the muskie to thaw so he could get an official measurement.
"It's real close to 48 inches," Job said.
The angler who caught the muskie was fishing northern pike and gaffed the fish, not knowing Devils Lake had tiger muskies, Job said. Given the circumstances, Job said he wasn't sure if the angler would face charges if the muskie measures less than 48 inches.
The angler will be able to keep the fish if it's 48 inches or longer, Job said.

well... i may eat crow on this one. but, it ain't the first time. and yes. its likely to shrink. so, we may never know the truth. but, if others fishing with him called to get a length and verified it was 48.5, they i guess i need to bust out some salt and pepper cause crow tastes shitty unseasoned.

That sucker would of been down the grinder - and a fresh filet (my shitty job of boneless) on my plate before Job even thought of a measuring stick. I hope the guy doesnt get a fine. Sounds like an innocent mistake. Gators with protection - what is this world coming two. Do signs exist at the public access with the law? I bet they do at new johns -- hmmm -- bring a pic to court day.

I get it was a mistake if it's under 48"...but it's everyone's responsibility to know the laws of the state you're fishing in. Period.

If you don't know the law your not innocent. As far as the big Johnson I'm out of that fight, but I got a bladder that can put out a forest fire on a windy day.

So is it really a musky being a half breed? Why don't they use northern laws since it is half northern. From what I can see this is the one time sconis were doing dl a favor by keeping them

they really had to ding em.

Who knows if its posted at audubon -- do they have a sign stating something about muskie lenghts. I know the proc is supposed to be read --- if you dont have a clue that the fish even exists in the lake. I would take it to court -- just for the principal of the matter. Why because all lakes that have skis or sterile skis have this law (please someobody correct me if i am wrong) (i dont fish for them slimes):

All waters open to hook and line fishing are open to darkhouse spearfishing except the following fishing waters which are closed:

  • East Park Lake – McLean Co.
  • Heckers Lake – Sheridan Co.
  • Lake Audubon – McLean Co.
  • Larimore Dam – Grand Forks Co.
  • McClusky Canal
  • New Johns Lake – Burleigh Co.
  • Red Willow Lake – Griggs Co.
  • West Park Lake – McLean Co.
  • Wood Lake – Benson Co.
