Just got back last night from second trip to the Big Windy. Struggled a bit this time compared to the first trip, but still had a lot of fun and the weather was excellent. Had 2 newbies with me and they each got an MA, so that was cool. Started fishing Thursday, mar 1 and had 21 fish that day. Ran a 5-6 area pattern that was on fire 10 days earlier and just couldn't get on them very well. Our shallow bite out of prudens was very slow, and it seemed as most of our active and bigger fish came north side of the big ridge in the 12-16 foot area. We had 3 fish over 26 that day. Friday was a bit better and we ended with 24 fish total, 3 MA's and 7 fish over 26. Our best luck was a wide swath in the 15-16 foot area. Each time we moved we only caught 1 or two fish, but always had a decent one. We moved 10 times that day. I also must say i kept track on this day and was able to drill 30 holes on one battery from the strikemaster 10 inch lithium! I think the warm temps helped and was very careful to keep the batteries warm. Sorry not trying to be a commercial, but a lot of folks have asked for updates on that. Sat we fished until 10:30 before heading home. We headed back out into 16 feet right away in the morning where we had found active fish day before. We caught 15 fish and had a 24 and 26 is all. My cousin set up 50 yds away and got a 28.5 and a 30.5 so that was awesome. Had 2 other groups of friends that fish up there a ton and mentioned similar success, but one group did get an 11 and a 12! 12 feet just north of ridge was their best area. Fun trip as always, good luck to all heading up!! May get one more trip end of season if conditions are favorable. Good luck and stay safe out there!

We really struggled on Thursday to find fish. Tried 14 different spots between 7 and 20' and only got a few eaters. Friday started out slow but ended up better. Got a 29.5 and a 30" and a few in the 25-27" range. not near the numbers of fish that we found a month ago. Was a great trip and the weather was perfect. Snootie Patootie and large spoons worked the best in 17'.

Also, I really wish I would have brought sunscreen...

I am heading up there in 2 weeks with a buddy and his kids. It will be my first time going and maybe his 15th, so I am excited to see how he does it. Will be prepping gear and spending some money at Scheels the next week and a half, I am pretty pumped.

Most the ice fishing gear is sold out or put away for the season, at least in GF. Good luck fishing!

I am headed up early Sunday Morning, staying at Canalta Hotel, Selkirk. Short trip, heading home Monday night. Any advise on where to get a license? Think it will be an issue early Sunday morning?

the 59er might have them as well so you dont have to drive into Selkirk if you want to head right to the lake. I suggest calling ahead to make sure they have them though and also what there hours are.

also, after this storm you will most likely need tracks I am guessing.

I'll be interested to hear what the best bet for travel will be. The storm has been pretty unimpressive for all the hype it got, so far a least.

there were plenty of trucks running around when I was up there but saw plenty of them getting stuck as well. I know one thing for sure, I will never buy a used truck from a Canadian ice fisherman. Man those guys beat the piss out of them. I prefer using snowmobiles so you dont have to worry about getting stuck and navigating around active ridges.

We got anywhere from 8-15 inches of heavy snow. It hit the lake at an angle, so beconia north got minimal snow, west side at chalet took a full hit. Winnipeg got 8-10 inches. Tracks would be better, more fishing, less shoveling, but wheels would be doable if you pick your route.

As for the comment about beating up our trucks, I can’t get my head around it. Guys willing to cause a couple grand in front end damage to their daily driver, but won’t spend 500 on a beater snowmobile. Just don’t get it.

traveling through Winnipeg in coming days will make whatever you’re hauling a brine covered frosted flake

it’s a big reason I haven’t returned - waiting until I have a covered/enclosed trailer system

Roads are already dry. Temps not getting above-freezing for the week.

Come on March 15th!!!! Hoping as long as there's no big storms between now and then access will be doable with a wheeled house behind a pickup.

Had a better day today. My uncle caught a 10 lb 11 oz.
and there were quite a few in the 26-27” range along with some eaters. Out toward the mouth all day.
No pic of the tank yet. I’ll get one, though.
