Sidekick, tracker, s10, bronco, liberty, jeep, etc... with tracks all sound more intriguing to me for 50% of the cost.

I have thought the same and have looked into it a bit. Not sure you could outfit one of those for 50% the cost of a SXS. You will have a machine that weighs 1-2K lbs more than a side by side. This bumps you up into the next weight class or two for tracks (more $$) and also limits your early and late season fishing. You also need a car hauler trailer which adds cost.

When I actually started looking at vehicles you mentioned above in the $5k range I started to get a bit discouraged. 20-35 year old vehicles with 100,000 - 150,000 miles. There's some high dollar maintenance cost risk when you take with going that route.

I travel by snowmobile but I have rode on an atv with tracks before and was shocked at how much snow they throw when conditions are right. I wouldnt have a ranger type rig with tracks and not put a cab on it IMO.

guywhodoesntlikesnowmobilesanymore, you should get yourself something like an alumalight skid house to pull behind your rig. Always thought that would be an awesome set up but fitting both on a trailer would be tricky. Would be great for lake winnipeg tho!

You can get solid half doors for a few hundred dollars. Can also get half or full windshield. Would set up with half doors and windshield keep you dry?

Skip the Polaris or Honda. If you want a good side by side with an excellent cab go John Deere. Glass cabs are amazing. I can go out in -20 in a sweatshirt and stay warm without any drafts. And if you take care of them you can put miles on like a car and they stay solid.

Dominator light truck tracks for 8k. Vehicle for 4k. Thats easily less than half of a new side by side with tracks, heater and cab. And has all the comforts of an actual vehicle. The trailer is an issue though for people not very close to a lake. And yes... they will be about 1 to 2k lbs more depending on what vehicle you get. Unibodies sound lighter tgan framed options. But, they also seem to be built cheaper. But, i have trouble believing a utv is built much better

I was doing quite a bit of looking at this same thing this winter... I went out to the youtubes and started watching mudding videos to see what brand could make it through the most shit... what I came up with was 1. can am 2. arctic cat 3. polaris got stuck... didn't see any hondas that I can recall (wasn't looking for them either)

price comparison between the can am and arctic cat were similar about 24-28k (new)

setup was this... SxS quad cab with bed (work horse style) 1000cc for can am and 700cc for arcitc cat

hard cab with heater (arctic cat is available now, can am is in development)
camoplast tracks (from the kid i spoke to that has more toys than I can imagine and a couple have nitrous on them, do not bother with anything else)
full brush bar setup
winch and reciever hitch up front
hitch in the back (had to say that)
and a camo wrap/paint

they all look like they can do the job it's just how much do you want to spend and then there is the new and used question... my personal past with used has not been that great and after looking at the average life span of ATV's if I ever pull that trigger it will be new... PS don't buy used from a farmer if you want it to run

for now i will be rolling in my buddies ranger with a soft cab and tracks... its a blizzard inside when we get there but we don't get stuck

I'm tired of the sleds and snowmobiles shuffle.

I have access to a Honda 700 series Honda sbs that is two years old. It lacks power steering so I would likely need to add that. No full cab either - just windshield right now I think.

So anyway I'm deciding should I invest time/$$ in getting that rig tracked up and trailered? If so - what brand of tracks? I imagine the 1000 is better and we should consider trading up rather than a power steering add to the 700?

My entire goal is to have everything on the rig - no individual bits/pieces being loaded/unloaded at the start/end of the day. Just trailer down and go fishing - just trailer up and head home.

Or is there some other make/model of sbs that gets along with tracks better and is just an all around better WAY to go vs the Honda?

Thanks!
I'm not sure you will be loading/unloading a whole lot less with a SxS. If it has a full card cab you can leave some stuff in it i guess, but you will still be pulling a sled house and will be loading and unloading a few things. I have an ATV with otter box and my buddy has a ranger with full heated cab. The only benefit i see is comfort(which is definitely nice), but it takes the same amount of time for us each to load/unload.

Weight of a vehicle would be my issue, because doesn't a guy need a trailer of some sort anyways if they went the side x side with tracks route?

I was going to ditch the sled/tipup and just set up the popup I would have with if too cold. Truth is if it's super crappy/windy I'm not into fishing that crap anyway.

Or look into Canvas Craft custom shelter that would fold right out the back bed.

And buy an enclosed trailer for locking at motels, etc.

Just looking to get away from the odds/ends.

Speaking of Honda 700's, if anyone is looking....I have a relative in central north dakota who is looking to sell one. Its a couple years old with a half windshield, hard doors. Can't remember how many miles. Its camo. He bought it for ranching/fencing but the cargo box area is too small for him. He's switching to something bigger. I think he wants 8k for it. If anyone is interested, PM me and we can talk in more detail.

One nice thing about the Ranger or one with that style and big box is you can build a big enclosed box to make it so you can put your things in there and leave them in it as it will be enclosed. You can build doors and drawers if needed. A buddy of mine did that to his in MT and he does lots of trapping, hunting, and fishing and keeps what he needs in it for that season.

New 2016 Ranger 900 EPS - $10,800
Factory Heater - $800
Enclosed Hard Cab - $3-$4k
Mattracks UTV EZLine - $3100

That's puts you at $17,700 to $18,700.
