Have any rocks you want to get rid of?

Does anybody have any rocks 6" to 12" they want to get rid of within 15 miles of Bismarck? I need 1 to 2 tons of them for a landscaping project. I will take smaller amounts also and I will haul them out myself (unless you really want to help).

Your best bet is to find a few fields with rock piles and then talk to the farmer. He'll be glad you want them. Only problem is you may need to wait until fall after the crops are off.

I picked near 80 tons of the fugging things back in 2003/04 for a project. Beat my F150's bed flat (underneath the plastic liner).

Jesus H. Christ if that wasn't a lot of work! I just stopped in the rock piles and fields up NE of Bismarck in the new developments and unplanted fields and helped myself, no landowner ever complained about me stealing their rocks. I suppose I should have asked, but really?

About halfway through the project I bought a few tons of black dirt for the garden and the owner of the company swung in to say hi. As he eyeballed my project, I asked what it would cost to haul rocks in for me to complete it. He wanted a ridiculous amount, so I politely declined and said I would continue with scrounging for them. He got huffy and said he "owned" 90% of the rocks within XX miles of Bismarck.

To which I replied, I am pretty sure you don't own those in my backyard (I had quite a few of my own on those 3.5 acres). All it did was make me damn sure I wasn't going to buy from him, anything...ever again.

So I am going to surmise someone has bought or leased a lot of the sand and gravel rights around the area. Just as long as you don't run into him, nobody else will give a crap.


Note, I am also pretty sure he doesn't own the sand and gravel to my current 40 acres, but there are very few rocks here or I'd let you come and help yourself.

any farmer will gladly let you take rocks. particularly the ones that are scattered throughout the field...

Always ask....My in laws have land north of Wilton. There is getting to be demand for the rocks as development around Bismarck continues. We've gotten calls from a few companies wanting to buy them. They use some for landscaping. The other calls we get is from companies that crush them and use them for gravel.

I did like the others did and asked a farmer whos field I was hunting cranes in if I could grab some of the rocks well there. the only part he didn't like about it was I wasn't going to take them all. But definitely ask otherwise you could legitimately be charged with theft of property.

Yep, I'd definitely ask if I were going to a farmers field to take rocks off a pile. A lot probably wouldn't give a shit, but local townships/counties etc buy those piles from time to time to rip rap along roads when the water is up. Grandpa sold dam near all his rock piles a few years ago for that reason.

yeah I think some landscaping places or entrepreneurs in town got smart and realized if they have the equipment and land to transport and pile these rocks for long term storage they can make a buck. They get to purchase the rocks from the landowners that don't want them for cheap and they can store them and sell them for high $$ to their clients.

There are some large stock piles of these boulders going on north of Bismarck.

The prices in town really vary. 4-8 inch rocks are $75 per ton at Prairie View and around $100 at Rocks and Blocks. At Strata they are $38 but I think the ones at Prairie View and Rocks and Blocks are a little nicer with less ugly ones.

Thanks. I called him but the rocks he had were sandstone which usually don't look very nice and fall apart. I want the glacial cobble stone.

Thanks. I called him but the rocks he had were sandstone which usually don't look very nice and fall apart. I want the glacial cobble stone.

Have tons of them at our farm but it is way too far away to try and save you some money.

The landscaping companies screw a guy big time. You are much better of getting materials from the construction companies, Knife River, Strata etc.
