yes. Its public land, which is limited, and just because you are sitting there doesn't mean you can claim the woods to yourself.
Hell why stop with knowingly pushing a spot someone is bowhunting. That tree he’s sitting in is public land too. Slap a stand right over his. Trees are limited in ND. Can’t claim the whole tree to himself.

When you see another group of rifle hunters working a public land spot, do you say “screw ‘em” too, and just start hunting towards them? Just curious how wide your courtesy towards fellow hunters goes

we start down here on saturday found a 2900 acre honey hole so kinda excited about this year. So whats the story behind starting at noon on fridays?

So whats the story on starting at noon on saturday for pheasants opener in SD for the first week, then at 10 AM from there on out?
Where we shoot from sunrise to sunset every day.

Every state is different and have different reasons, same with goose hunting SD and ND have different shooting hours.

Maybe KDM or Nean Delson can share some insight on the noon starting time in ND.

After waiting four years for a buck tag again that I drew this year in 2B i was going to wait for the big guy. Still probably will for the first couple days but after that I've decided i'll shoot anything somewhat respectable because this is the only weekend that my daughter will be around for deer season this year and my four year old little girl keeps asking if I can shoot one so she can see it. That is worth more than a head on the wall in my opinion.

Good luck and stay safe everyone. I will be hanging out in the pop-up blind and hopefully will get to enjoy some of the scenes like last year.

I'm the VERY LAST person to ask when it comes to why the ND game and fish does what they do!!! I haven't the foggiest idea why the Friday noon opener exists. Though it was a great excuse to get out of school for the day. (Grin)

I will answer the questions. I was asking a question as i was interested if there was some kind of cool story behind starting at noon on a friday. Relax there francis.

Its the weekend most people dont work on saturdays so they would have the ability to go hunting.

Because shooting pheasants is easy in the morning then the time change happens is why it switches to 10 so you have about the same amount of time to hunt with the sun setting earlier.

The shooting hours for waterfowl also have something to do with the feds as they are part of setting the season i think.

I may jump in here with a question. If a guy or party of rifle hunters sees a bowhunter sit in a tree stand or blind, do you leave him be or push the woods or what? The last 3 years I have been sitting in my stand and guys start pushing where I am sitting. If they didn't see me so be it. Just wanted to see the consensus. Public land by the way.

personally I wouldn't be sitting in a stand if there is a lot of rifle hunters in the area, bow hunters get from sept to jan to hunt, rifle season is 2 weeks 3 weekends.

Just because the guy went in prior to sunrise to bow hunt does not give him exclusive rights to hunt the entire woods by himself. Bow hunters know or at least should know the woods will be full of gun hunters during the 16 1/2 day season. If a bow hunter wants the solitude of the woods that he experiences other times maybe he should not hunt during the 16 1/2 day gun season and hunt the other 106 plus days of the bow season which is 122 plus days long.

How wide should the courtesy zone be 20 acres, 50 acres, 100 acres, 1000 acres just how much should we let one guy tie up?

Hell why stop with knowingly pushing a spot someone is bowhunting. That tree he’s sitting in is public land too. Slap a stand right over his. Trees are limited in ND. Can’t claim the whole tree to himself.

It is a State law in ND that all big game openers will be at noon on a Friday. Someone had an idea way back when and it is still the same today.

Not totally accurate. Moose and Elk openers are 1/2 hour before sunrise opening day as well as the rest of the season. Bighorn sheep might be as well.

I think the noon openers are just kind of a tradition now. It's nice to get the gang together and shoot the bull before the season kicks off. It gives the deer a sporting chance to figure out what's up and probably a little safer to get folks out during broad daylight that first day and knock a few out early too.

I personally avoid other hunters like the plague. I much prefer finding somewhere to myself especially during gun season but it's easier said then done some places. I'd never knowingly hunt thru an area with other hunters in there.

I will be getting some exercise helping out a friend's son with his youth tag. Probably bring the trident along in the event a coyote comes my way.

I found this info

The first statewide gun season came in 1952 and ran between 2.5 days and 4.5 days, depending on the unit.

In 1949, the Legislature passed a law requiring the opener start at noon, allowing farmers and ranchers to get their morning chores done before hunting.

The law was later repealed, then reinstated in 1963 and in 1962, the opener fell on a Tuesday.

It was in that year the season was extended to 9.5 days statewide and an experimental season of 16.5 days was set in the Turtle Mountains two years later.

In 1983, the transition to the 16.5-day season started in some units in the eastern part of the state while western units stayed at 9.5 days.

In 1985, the whole state, except for the Badlands, went to a 16.5-day season That changed in 1986 and 1987, when some units had 23.5 days.

In 1988, the regular deer gun season changed again to what we know today.
