Why just the gun season? why not shut down bow hunting also as I am sure the rut has a similar impact for bow hunters also.
Big drawback though. You would be killing some nice bucks before they had a chance to breed. Also, some areas already have a low buck to doe population. I think not only would you affect the population negatively in some areas, but the genetics in most areas. If you think it's more sporting to hunt out of the rut, then hunt after the rut. Then you will take some bucks who have become so energy depleted that in all likelihood they would die in a moderate to bad winter.Since everyone is giving there two cents on a one tag system, what is everyone's thought on the gun season being moved to before the rut?
You have to be dry fu#$ing me to ask that question..... really
We can't bait in sodak so I would be happy to see rifle season not in the rut it would make a difference in both quality and quantity

Wow, I didn't see that coming. Obi-Whine immediately griping about bow hunters in a thread about rifle hunting.
Who are you wanting to improve quality for bow, rifle hunters, or both?

The movement of mature bucks during hunting hours increases greatly during the rut. Bucks that are typically nocturnal will venture out during daylight hours thus allowing them to be harvested by both bow and gun hunters. So if it is beneficial to overall quality to shut rifle season down during the rut why would it not also be beneficial to shut it down for bow hunters? It would be both. But you are clueless thinking bow hunting and gun hunting are on the same level. I am a rifle hunter who is learning to bow hunt.
