If I recall, he was forced out to save costs. So, no non-compete signed. If I'm thinking of the same person, he had a well written essay written about it. A LOT of individuals who play pioneering or founding roles in new industries/niches are, well.... complicated.
And they are, frankly, a PITA to be around a lot of the time.
