ND Rifle application: You can apply for first unit choice and second unit choice. Do you have a better chance of getting the unit you want if you put it as your first and second choice? It's not clear to me how it works. Or does it just negate itself because you already selected it as your first choice and you should put a different unit for your second choice?

I'd answer this but it seems to much like Lunkers question on lawn mowers and electric pto motors. :ROFLMAO:
Ok then. Thanks for helping a fellow sportsman who's asking "an obvious, dumb question". Just wanting to know - seems they shouldn't allow you to select the same unit twice in their drop down menu if there wasn't possibility that they'd run it again as your second choice.

You're what's wrong with NDA. I won't hold my breath on "Sorry dude, here's the answer".

The license lottery consists of four separate drawings, one for each choice on the application. First, we hold a drawing for the first unit/first deer choice. When those are issued, we draw for the first unit/second deer choice, then the second unit/first deer choice, and finally the second unit/second deer choice.
My understanding of the drawing is depending on the unit and its #'s, but in general most of the tags for a unit are gone by end of 1st or 2nd drawing. So putting in for 2nd unit choice for the same unit of 1st unit choice is for the most part a wasted app. If the unit has 4 different species choices you can apply all your choices for that unit for desired species 1 thru 4 but by the second unit choice you may be drawing dead depending on how many people apply and how many tags available. Say you hunt unit 2B and there are only 2 species choices then by second unit choices the tags should be gone or you would have been drawn in the 1st unit choices if this makes sense. If you want to hunt only a certain unit then the best is to put in for same unit for all choices. All info above is not 100% guaranteed by I believe for the most part correct. May want to reach out G&F for clearer explanation.

Nice answer for someone asking a valid question that maybe does not have the great white hunting prowess of yourself. You do realize that Catdaddy tends to ask questions he genuinely does not know or has not been able to find answer's for himself and tends to try to help where he can. I have never really seen him pose questions just for the sake of starting arguments. You obviously don't know the answer so just move along.

I think @dukgnfsn is the pretty good from my understanding. If you want to hunt one particular unit but maybe don't care if you get a buck or a doe you can do Unit# you want 1st choice as a buck then Same Unit# as a doe and hope that there were tags left over to make a 2nd drawing. If you are looking for a buck specifically then you would want to have different units for 1st and 2nd choice. Might be better to call G&F and see if you get someone that can explain it better

I normally go Antlered Antlered in the unit I really want to hunt and then Antlered Antlerless in secondary unit.
Lately with less licenses allowed I just go buck/doe in first unit choice and let it go

I do any antlered in all choices and same unit in first and second choice.

Usually draw a tag every other year, this year thinking of just buying a preference point.

I believe what dukgnfsn posted is correct. Basically, if there was a tag available for you in the 1st drawing it would have been given to you and so applying for the same tag for your 2nd choice doesn't do anything. Only way 2nd choice helps is if say you put in for a buck with your first choice and not all the doe tags go in the first drawing, you could have a chance to draw a doe if you put that for your 2nd choice (or put in for one of the few units where not all the bucks tags get drawn in the 1st lottery).

With the tag numbers I imagine (with the exception of a few units), if you don't draw whatever you put for your first choice, you're probably SOL!!

In all the years of putting in for my kids and myself. We have never been selected on the 2nd unit. And we always put in for 2nd unit

Really appreciate all the help guys. I think it's crystal clear now. Seems pretty obvious, I get it, but it certainly was mixed up in my head on how it works.

I get drawn in my 2nd unit almost every year. My first unit is the badlands and that’s a 4-7+ year proposition to get that tag, so I usually draw my 2nd unit.
