That is great that Lincoln in Bismarck is able to expand but most schools across North Dakota, especially the smalls schools are facing budget deficits.
Ok here it goes. These are my reasons and you can think good or bad of them. It is how I came to the conclusion I have.
#1 There is a stigma attached to being the poor kid or the free school lunch kid. If you have ever worked in a school as much as I like to educate my kids, they can be downright cruel to the kid that is different than they are. Kids know and unless you are around kids that arent your own a lot it is hard to understand.
#2 You would think because the program is out there everyone would apply and it would be easy. They don't and many families that do not meet threshold do not pay. School then have to attempt to collect a debt and to be honest many of those debts are not collectable. So now that money is not recouped and the only one hurt is the kid. Free school lunch takes care of this and these is a good possibility it would be cheaper.
#3 This one I do not think you will like but I do. Taxpayers provide for books, building upkeep, extra curriculars etc....I think lunch should be included in that.
#4 I think it is the right thing to do. I get the whats mine is mine argument, I really do, and in some aspects of my life I think that way. When it comes to the kids I can not and will not think that. I can speak for most if not all of my colleagues and they are the same. Standing up for people that can't stand up for themselves. Heck I wish more kids would be allowed to get their higher education for free...I think we would be smarter as a society and have less dependence on government programs. Education= more lifetime earnings.
Now I will really get ripped!
