How about a 3 day coyote kill marathon by what ever means possible.

What is the name of your mail order bride again? She looked or talked like Scat Man Carruthers if I recall. Dang.. I may have to put that CD in and listen to that classic again! Oops..get back on topic. haha

Coyotes are an issue, but I know in the SE part of the state the bigger issue is habitat. There is very little crp, the tree rows are being ripped out, and with things being dry and the crops off early everything is being dug black and sloughs are being burned. We better hope for a good winter or our deer could be in big trouble with the lack of cover.

What he said! Good grief, guys. I'm all for whacking as many Wile-E's as you can, but you will NEVER, and I mean NEVER, kill enough of them to replace what has been lost through decreased habitat acres. SE ND is case-in-point. The only habitat available for anything through the winter months are standing cattails (which get burned), tree rows (which are getting dozed) and rivers/streams (which account for very little).

Milder winters will definitely help, but what happens when the bad winters return and the deer/pheasants have nowhere to shelter? History will repeat itself. No way around it. Mild winters give us false hope on the carrying capacity of the land. Try a couple feet of snow and a good month of below zero weather and THEN watch what happens to all the deer and pheasants...

Incentivize landowners/farmers to keep marginal land in cover, promote buffer strips and get some of the tree rows back. They ain't gonna do it on their own. Gotta grease the palms a bit.

Cue GST in 3, 2, 1...

Yup! We enjoy driving around the grasslands and keep on the lookout for land with actual grass, hard to find some places.

Whoa slow down Jeb. Raise the price and leave the numbers where they are at. Winter looks good. It will payoff big

I'm with you, the dedicated hunter wouldn't hesitate to spend 300 on a buck tag or more. That would put the damper on guys putting grandma in for a buck tag. The gratis system needs some work, a few neighbors were drawn in the lottery and also rec'd a gratis for any legal deer, that should be impossible. What happened to the "after gratis" part of the drawing?

Raising the price of tags is absolutely ridiculous. How would that help?

In the history of killing coyotes a bounty system has never worked to eradicate coyotes. Last year I killed just about 100 in an area of about 40 square miles, look at it this year and you wouldn't think I killed a single one. Kill a bunch one year and they will just have larger litters next year and most of those pups will be females. Mother nature and mass poisoning are really all that is effective to wipe out coyotes. And because of incidental kills of animals other than coyotes nobody would stand behind the poisoning.

They had to turn in the gratis tag but how does this work now? I put in for a lottery tag and a gratis at the same time, I didn't get drawn but got a gratis tag. So they hold the lottery and say 1000 buck tags were available, out of the 1000 tags it's safe to say 300 went to landowners that also put in for a red tag so how do they delineate who gets the remaining 700 buck tags for the unit? Do they hold a lottery and pick say 1500 in order and how ever many landowners get drawn they backfill those tags with the lucky guys that get drawn? We used to put in for the lottery and when we didn't get drawn we'd send in a gratis app and get a red tag, they stopped that which is a good thing but I don't know how they do it now, obviously it has some bugs, anyone have any info on this?

You must not have grandmas, aunts, great grandmas and wives that don't have a clue to even load a rifle get tags in your unit, we sure do. Would a guy put in for all of his relatives in hopes that a few get drawn if it cost him a few grand?

Why in the hell would you want the price raised?

What about those who have a family and have to buy the sportsmans stamp and the individual licenses for the whole family? What about those who arent flush with money? Like i said before raising prices is not going to help anything just make it harder for people to afford licenses. Going hunting shouldnt have to break the bank.

Agreed. There's been actual studies that prove it, but to make a purely speculative argument based on nothing but my own logic: All a bounty does is entices half-ass "hunters" to go after them by shady methods ie: snowmobiles, etc.

Seeing as though there's currently a lot more opportunity to hunt coyotes than deer, and hunting them is more fun anyway, I would prefer you leave my coyotes alone.

I'm told that "yote" is a racial slur. They prefer to be called "Coyote Americans".
