You want to start boiling the down to the real issues of taxes. It's a system based on the ability to pay versus being based on the services you receive. Make more money, pay more in income taxes but get the same or less benefits than the person or family making less. Work hard, own a nice home, make improvements and keep it up. Not only did you pay tax on those improvements, but now the property is valued higher and there for you pay more in property tax. Mean while, you could have some dirt bags next door that put nothing into there home, run it into the ground and pay a fraction of property tax; all while we drive on the same roads, kids go to the same school, we get the same utilities, police, and fire protection. Seems fair ;;;;;;;. I don't even want to get started on vehicles and how the f'n state gets to charge tax on the same vehicle over and over and over again every time its sold............

I will however note that for the first time ever, our property taxes actually decreased, mostly due to a devaluation of $20k of the property; Which brings me to point number two, if it's over valued now, it was probably over valued last year which meant we've been over paying in previous years ;:;banghead

Yeah penalize people for making improvements, ie spending money to update and upkeep their homes while the people living in a shithole pay less but get the same services. Makes total sense.....;:;banghead

SLE your perspective is spot on and should be a reality check, but those low life's sucking up the benefits don't understand that if you parasitize the host to much for to long they die/go bankrupt.

got ours today.
house true and full value up 4100 and taxes down 6 bucks.
Since we moved in in 97 house value has gone from low 90,000 to low 140,000. Just basic upkeep on house with no addition added on. db

Everything up except income, have to wait until next year for that. Interesting to see how much Uncle Sam will take back off from SS raise. Wife works for a major health care provider in Fargo and they have been doing a great job of helping their rank and file keep up with the times. With out that we would have been screwed. LB

Just a side note, as I caught this old post from myself from 2022 where I mention my property tax going down. That is not longer the case as over the last two years the county has now raised my valuation by more than a $100k yet not a single improvement was done to the property short of general maintenance and they simply use the argument that they have to have the valuation of 95% market value. F'kn crooks...................even though the bulk of inflation happened between 2020 and 2022 (covid erra) which is when they dropped the valuation, now they go back and raise the valuation by 25%. WTF

l still don't understand how we can be taxed on income and on what we spend our money on. When I first learned about that in high school, it came off as wrong. And now over two decades later, I still can't fathom it.

I also don't get how something you own outright can still be taken away from you if you don't pay recurring taxes on it. A little old bitty out in the country could get kicked off the farm because she has no income, even though her house has been paid off for years.

There are things that taxes can help with in a modern society. I'm ok that my money fixes roads and goes to schools and even conservation, but do it once. Tax the things I buy. Unless you build everything you need or grow it, you're a consumer. Tax that. Leave my income and my property out of it.
